Job Shadow Narrative

During my job shadow on September 30, I sat down in Maggie Hernandezs office in the
migrant program site. I chose to job shadow her because being a migrant program coordinator
interest me a lot actually. Migrant Program has helped not only me but hundreds of other low
income students by giving them opportunities that they would never get without Migrant
Program. It has always interested me to help others in my future job, and working as a
coordinator/counselor might just be it.
During the job shadow I sat down in her office and we started off by just talking about
what type of degrees and what type of education is needed in order to obtain this job. We met up
with an out of school youth group. The group is divided into two parts a recovery group and a
here to work group. The recovery group is students that failed to graduate because of a failure
to complete courses or failure to pass CHASEE. The here to work group is for students who have
no education what so ever in The United States. They come to learn the English language and
work.
We had four appointments that day with students that participated in this program. One
example was a meeting with a young man named Noel 20 years of age. Noel showed up for the
yearly assessment in this program. He explained to us how he had recently went to PC to take
two exams for his GED is just waiting for the results of those test. We also asked him a couple of
questions and signed him up for GED classes offered by the migrant program. He was really

excited that he was so close to actually getting his GED which to him was an almost impossible
thought. The same process took place with the other meetings we had.
One of the main things I learned during my job shadow is that to be able to have this job
one needs to be social, organized, and have a lot of patients. If one does not have those three
things then this might not be the job to choose. The main thing I like about this job is that it has
to do with working with others. I always enjoy helping, motivating, and inspiring others to
become better, greater, and expect more of themselves. I want to help others believe more in
what they do and help them create higher expectations for themselves. I have seen many people
give up only because of lack of motivation or lack of resources and as a youth councilor I can
help others become more of themselves. I honestly dislike nothing about this job.
I am even more interested in this job than what I was before. Having that job shadow
made me realize that being a youth counselor is more than just calling and talking to people, but
its a job that helps change the lifes of many lower waged people. Its a job that helps improve
the life of many in a very beneficial and positive way. Its a job that can affect the life of a cast
variety of people in one of the most positive ways possible.
