FORCE AND MOTION

WHAT IS MOTION?

MOTION is an object changing

position over time

WHAT IS FORCE?

A FORCE is the push or pull of an object

Applying FORCE to an object can change its
motion.
There are two categories of forces: balanced and
unbalanced.

WHAT IS A BALANCED
FORCE?
BALANCED

FORCES cause an object to

remain in place.
A chair in your classroom can represent a
BALANCED FORCE.
The gravity pulling the chair down is
balanced by the force of the floor pushing
the chair up.

WHAT IS GRAVITY?

GRAVITY is a force that pulls everything toward the

center of the earth.

WHAT IS AN UNBALANCED FORCE?

UNBALANCED FORCES can cause an object to
start moving, stop moving or change directions.
UNBALANCED FORCES change motion of
objects.
The change of motion depends on 3 factors:
direction of the force, strength of the force and
mass of the object.

WHAT IS MASS?
The MASS of an object describes how much matter
it contains.
Example: A soccer ball will move much farther than
a bowling ball when the same force is applied.
Why? Because the bowling ball has more MASS!

SIR ISAAC NEWTON

Sir Isaac Newton was born in England on December 25,

1643. He lived for 85 years.
While Newton was in college, he had new ideas about
motion, which he called his three laws of motion.

NEWTONS FIRST LAW OF MOTION

An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on

by an unbalanced force. An object in motion
continues in motion with the same speed and in the
same direction unless acted upon by an
unbalanced force.

This law is often called

"the law of inertia".

WHAT IS INERTIA?
INERTIA is an objects resistance to a change in
motion.
INERTIA is an objects tendency to remain at rest or
remain in motion.
A massive object has more INERTIA and a less
massive object has less INERTIA.

NEWTONS SECOND LAW OF MOTION

Acceleration is produced when a force acts on a
mass. The greater the mass of the object being
accelerated, the greater the amount of force
needed to accelerate the object.
Heavier objects require more force to move the
same distance as lighter objects.

WHAT IS ACCELERATION?
ACCELERATION

(velocity).

is a change in speed

FRICTION
FRICTION is what happens when any two things
rub against each other.
FRICTION acts in the opposite direction of the
objects motion.
FRICTION can also result from air resistance.

NEWTONS THIRD LAW OF MOTION

For

every action, there is an equal and

opposite re-action.
This means that whenever an object pushes
another object, it gets pushed back in the
opposite direction equally hard.
