Principles of Design

By: Siena Werner

Color
My mom has these
light purple curtains
in her bedroom.
The purple hue of
their color has a
light value and is
low in saturation.
The cool color has
a comforting affect.

Line
The columns in my
living room are
examples of vertical
lines represent
strength as they
seem to hold the
ceilings up. They also
serve as movement
as your eyes follow
them from one side of
the house to the
other.

Mass
The island in my kitchen
represents mass as its
large three dimensional
shape separates the
kitchen. Its geometric
shape contrasts with its
organic colors.

Shape
This wall art is the
epitome of shape as
the two dimensional
design is both
interesting to look at
and a nice contrast
from the paint as its
curved lines differ
from the vertical and
horizontal ones.

Space
This archway
represents space as it
seems to be cut
directly through the
wall creating a
negative space. This
space suits the area
nicely as it provides
contrast from the thick
wall it was built in.

Texture
The walls in my house
have a rough texture
creating a more natural
feel, combining with the
organic colors and adding
a more organic vibe to
the house. Its
dimensions give the paint
a variety of values.

Material
My house is lined with
and mainly built with
wood exemplifying
material. The wood
makes the house very
organic and traditional
feel as wood has been
the basis for many
houses throughout
time.

Balance
The single window
on either side of
the door
represents formal
balance. The iron
design on the door
also represents
this symmetrical
balance which is
very pleasing to
the eye.

Contrast
The mosaic of the
sunset above the table
represents contrast is
it features mainly
warm colors which
differs from the cool
colors that surround it.
It provides a pop of
color and the contrast
gives it an interesting
aesthetic.

Emphasis
The emphasis of
my kitchen are the
massive windows.
Taking up a
majority of the
wall, once
entering the
kitchen your eye
is instantly drawn
to the view
outside the
windows.

Form
My wood fire place
exemplifies form as its
sturdy wood construction
makes it look heavy as it is
the centerpiece of the house
and seems to be the weight
holding everything else in
place.

Meaning
The pictures adorning
our dining room wall
represent meaning as
where someone may
see them as just
pretty embellishment,
my mom sees the
museums she has
visited and the places
she has lived. She
chose these
decorations because
they all hold personal
meaning to her.

Rhythm
The wood paneling
in the office
represents regular
rhythm as it is
evenly repeated
throughout the room
creating movement
and unity.

Scale
In the kitchen, my
fireplace represents
scale as the actual fire
place, the mantle, the
art, and the clock are
proportional creating a
pleasing aesthetic as
the different elements
seem to fit together.

Symbolism
To me, the organic
color scheme of my
kitchen symbolizes
nature as all forms
are created using a
heavy wood material
and all of the walls
are painted light
natural colors such
as green and blue.
