Please Read Before starting the Program

Congratulations on starting
Project Safe and Sound at your
school!
Dear Project Safe and Sound Volunteer,
We would like to congratulate you and thank you for beginning this amazing
program in your school! This project cant be done without your help!
It is required to have proper permissions and supervision in place if you are
wishing to start this program. It is also important to have teachers on
standby to answer any questions or address any concerns that the students
may have that are beyond you.
Project Safe and Sound is a program created by a Massapequa Girl Scout
Ambassador for her Gold Award. Project Safe and Sound is a program to give
students with special needs the necessary tools to advocate for themselves
in case of an unforeseen encounter with a stranger. The program uses
games, role play, and interactive videos to helps students understand the
concept of strangers, what to do, and learn what situations are safe and not
safe. The program is geared toward all ages, and can be adapted to the way
that teachers of the students best see fit.
In this booklet you will find session instructions and supplies needed to run
the program. The program is adapted for a classroom setting, but can be
changed to fit different settings, such as a club, after school, or large group
setting. You are responsible for putting all of the supplies together.
The Program is broken up into 5 sections, which can be done in one day or
divided into several days. The adaptations are up to you!
Some schools may choose to celebrate the students achievements, and
have a party, or a celebration and invite family members.
We ask that you (a volunteer), the teacher of the class, some of the students
or all three of you, write down your experience with the program and send it
to us through our site to be posted. Although we would love to hear your
feedback, this is totally optional!

We hope that you have a great time exploring the program, and we thank
you for all of your support!

Be comfortable if the students do not make eye contact, even

though they are not, they are still listening to what you are
saying. You may also have to talk slower and/or repeat yourself.
Do not get frustrated with this. It is also important to understand
that the students may learn different ways, so be prepared to
adjust the way that you show or say things.
Make sure that you have proper permission in place. It is
important to talk to the teachers and administration of your
school before you can go into the classroom.
Your enthusiasm is also very important! Everyone will be more
excited to learn about the information that you want to teach. If
you are not a public speaker, ask your friends or teachers for tips,
help or to even teach the program with you. As long that they are
as passionate as you are!
It is also important to have proper supervisions, teachers, aids, or
people that work in the school that know the students better than
you do. This is important, because coming into the school day
may disrupt their routines, which may cause forms of anxiety.
This is also important in the case of an unforeseen behavioral
reaction, so that the supervision in the classroom can resolve any
issues quickly and easily. The topic may also be emotional for
some. The purpose of this is not to scare you, but to educate you
on situations that are real possibilities but have a very slim
chance of actually happen.
You may also need to send a paper home to the parents regarding
the program, to either ask for permission or just to let them know
whats going on! A suggested sample letter to parent is included
in this packet as well as a sample invitation to a celebration
should you choose to have one.

Dear Parent/Guardian,
We are very excited to announce that the students of the Special Education
Department will be participating in a program entitled Project Safe and Sound on
(date).
The program was created by a Massapequa Girl Scout as her Gold Award
project. The program is designed to give students the tools to advocate for
themselves in the event of a dangerous encounter with a stranger, or in the event
that they are lost and cannot find their way home. The program teaches the
students, what a stranger is, to make key observations, who are their trusted adults,
and how to talk to a 911 operator in the event of such an emergency using games
like Heads Up as well as interactive cartoons.
The students will take home more information about the project and what
they learned on that day.
The workshop will be taught (during the school day, after school) on (date)
by (student volunteer, teacher NAME), who has worked with the teachers of the
special education department and administrators, and has been trained on how to
teach the program.
(OPTIONAL, ONLY IF HAVING A CELEBRATION) We will be
celebrating all the students achievements (date, time, and place), where the
students will receive their certificates, parents and family members are all invited.
If there are any questions or concerns, please contact (School name, phone
number).
Sincerely,
