Course Description
Students in English II explore the ways that audience, purpose, and context shape oral
communication, written communication, and media and technology. While emphasis is placed on
communicating for purposes of personal expression, students also engage in meaningful
communication for other purposes. English II emphasizes grammar and language usage as
important parts of communication. There is an English II end-of-course exam which focuses on
reading literary and informational texts and demonstrating mastery of understanding through
multiple choice responses, short answer written responses, and an essay response.
Course Objectives
Students will be able to
-Express reflections and reactions to literature and to personal experience
-Explain meaning, describe processes, and answer research questions
-Evaluate communication and critique texts
-Make and support an informed opinion
-Participate in conversations about and written analysis of literary genres, elements, and
traditions
-Use knowledge of language and standard grammar.
Materials Needed
2 Three-ring Binder
Pencils / Pens (Blue or Black)
Loose Leaf Paper
Dividers (at least 6 of them)
Highlighters
Composition notebook (*these will be provided to the students)
Grading Plan
Classwork/Homework 30%
Tests/Projects 40%
Quizzes/Assessments 30%
*All students will participate in the Reading Counts Program as part of their grade. Each student
must read at least one book per six-weeks and take the corresponding RC test. The test score(s)
will count as test grades.

When a student does not comply with a classroom policy or expectation, they will serve the

4. Have a positive attitude.
Having a bad attitude is disrespectful. Keep an open mind during class activities and they will be
more fun!
