Second call for Abstracts

19th Annual International Philosophy of Nursing Society

(IPONS) Conference

Technology, Health Care and Personcenteredness:

Beyond Utopia and Dystopia. Thinking the
Future

August 24-26, 2015

Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden
We are pleased to invite you to the 19th annual IPONS conference. This year we focus on the
intersections of philosophies of technology and health. Technology is part of the everyday of
health care practices, so much so that it is difficult to imagine health practices that are not
technologically mediated. This means we need analyses that are also grounded in the everyday,
that move us beyond dystopian or utopian tropes, that help us to explore questions such as:

How should we understand technology as an actor in health care?

What are the implications of technology-mediated relations for patients and practitioners?
How might technology assist or replace human care in the future? What are the possibilities and
risks?
What is embodiment in digitalised health care? What does this mean for health in more general
terms?

We invite theoretical and philosophically framed empirical papers for concurrent sessions (20
minutes, followed by discussion) exploring these and other questions relevant to philosophy of
nursing and health care.
The conference will include plenary speakers and concurrent sessions. We welcome researchers,
scholars and students from diverse fields including nursing, medicine, allied health care, the
humanities, social sciences, technical sciences and technology studies.
