Visual Research
My inspiration came from iTunes music genre iconography. I believe that the imagery chosen was over complicating
the concept. Therefore, I chose to design A set of Icons that could incorporate elements of photography into a
simplified design set. I also wanted to make sure that I was representing each genre appropriately, and without
using negative stereotypes and images.

Visual Research
I began by making a list of popular music genres and created a list of 10 genres that would be challenging
and visually interesting. I then started making decisions about images that would appropriately resemble
those genres. After some exploration I found that some Images wouldnt represent their respective genre
well enough, so I explored several options.

Exploration
I chose to use a circular format to contain the various shapes that were being used to identify each icon,
because it mimicked the itunes brand mark and set an interesting limit of space available for my designs.

Revisions
After creating a set of icons that were functional, I went back to my original set of values I wanted each
icon to hold, I found that some of them upheld negative stereotypes and werent simple enough. This gave me
room to edit and re-evaluate some of my decisions.

Final Decisions
These are the final Icons designs that I settled on. I was given critique on the weight of each icon and how
they funtioned as a group, so i payed attention to the small details and made sure that they beared the
same visual weight.

Application
After making final decisions on my iconography, I started building various applications that they would
be used in. I found that the most important use would be an app like spotify that could be used across
multiple platforms. I chose to start with a mobile application first and then to work into a larger
tablet application. I placed the icons over abstracted color fields, that would serve to make the icons
stand out and give more touch space for selection.

Mobile Application
After a few different options I decided that Ostrich Sans Black led its self to creating a very thin,
innovative, and clean design that would only add to the imagery.

LArger Applications
After creating a solid mobile application concept, it was easy creating other applications because a
rule set was already in place for a larger application. This was helpful for both a table display and an
electronic jukebox, that would promote the developing brand in other alternative situations.

Final Thoughts
I am really happy with the way that this design system came together. I would like to expand my
research and practice into possibly rebranding spotify. I really appreciate their company and would love
to work with an established company and reinvent elements of their brand.
