Photos also can motivate readers.
Adds personal relevance.
Adds visual details.
Retains to the reader.
Can demonstrate developments.

Limitations
Not ideal for comparing values.
Cannot depict mechanisms.

Picture

The image that the reader views.

Caption

Captions are titles that highlight or


describe visuals, such as photographs.

Callouts

Texts that appear within the illustration


itself. In photographs, it is called label.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines for Photographs


Only use color when color adds value.
Indicate the relative size of the subject.
Remove non-pertinent items from the
background.

Guidelines for Captions


Give the illustration a unique caption.
Should not give information found in
the text or photograph.
Should not provide unnecessary
background information.
Use longer and more descriptive
captions for a lay audience than those
for a purely technical or scientific
audience.

Write the caption as a noun.

Make it visible.
Where possible, keep the line straight.

APPLICATIONS

It was suggested that the interior of the


canteen should be wider.
