Chapter#2 Kinematics
Questions
Short Questions
1. Can a body moving at a constant speed have
acceleration?
Ans. No, a body moving at constant speed have not
acceleration.
2. How do riders in a Farris wheel possess translatory motion
but not rotatory motion?
Ans. As passengers are moving in translatory motion of
riders in a Farris wheel.
3. Why vector quantities cant be added and subtracted like
scalar quantities?
Ans. Because vectors are added only graphically. These
are not scalars which are simply added, subtracted
mathematically.
4. How are vector quantities important to us in our daily life?
Ans. Vector quantities are important to us in our daily life
in engineering, building houses etc.
5. Give three equations of motion for freely falling body.
Ans. The three equations are given below:
1. Vf = Vi + gt
2. S = Vit + gt2
3. 2gS = Vf2 Vi2
6. What are scalar and vector quantities?
Ans. A physical quantity which can be completely
described by its magnitude is called a scalar. The
magnitude of a quantity means its numerical value with

an appropriate unit such as 2.5 kg, 40 s, 1.8 m, etc.
Examples of scalars are mass, length, time, speed,
volume, work and energy. A vector can be described
completely by magnitude along with its direction.
Examples of vectors are velocity, displacement, force,
momentum, torque, etc. It would be meaningless to
describe vectors without direction.
7. Define kinematics.
Ans. Kinematics is the study of motion of an object
without discussing the cause of motion.
8. Define velocity.
Ans. The rate of change of displacement of a body with
respect to time is called velocity. Its unit is ms -1.
9. What is relative velocity?
Ans. When two bodies are in motion then the velocity of
one body relative to other is called relative velocity.
10. What is rotatory motion?
Ans. When each point of a body moves around a fixed
point then the motion of that body is called rotatory
motion e.g. motion of spinning top.
11. Define retardation.
Ans: Acceleration of a body is negative if velocity of the
body decreases. The direction of negative acceleration is
opposite to the direction in which the body is moving.
Negative acceleration is also
called deceleration or retardation.
