Honorio Gonzalez - Lesson #2

Knowing the Color Wheel

Conceptual Knowledge Lesson Model
Concept Attainment Model pgs. 115-147
1st grade Art
1. MATERIALS/PREPLANNING
Materials Flash cards displaying the different colors on the color wheel, one flashcard
with entire color wheel on it. Crayons for visual and kinesthetic learning. Computer,
tablet, and educational program.
Vocabulary Color wheel, primary colors, secondary colors
Literature The Concept Attainment Model is a dynamic, interactive model that
supports students deep understanding of concepts and developments of conceptual
knowledge (Kilbane and Milman, 2014, p. 117).
2. OBJECTIVE
The students will learn and analyze the different colors on the color wheel and why it is
like that and how the color wheel works.
The Level is that of knowledge and comprehension and application.
The students will develop an understanding of a concept through the examination of
examples and non-examples of the color wheel and the analysis of the critical and
noncritical attributes of it (Kilbane and Milman, p. 118).
Working in flat, two-dimensional formats, students create three-dimensional works of art
through the use of texture and color. Along with learning the elements of art, such as
line, color, shape, and texture, students describe a variety of subject matter in works of
art. For example, they can examine landscapes portrayed in early-morning light or at
night; seascapes on a calm or stormy day; portraits of men and women, boys and girls;
and still-life compositions of objects large to small, bright to dull, and rough to smooth.
3. ASSESSMENT
Key question: What will the students think, say, and do, after assessing the lesson of the
color wheel?
I would ask the students to describe in their own words to me a very basic
definition/understanding of what the color wheel is and how it works.
My method of assessment is informal and my assessment tool is a rubric detailing the
expected goals of my lesson plan for the students.
This assessment links with this model because is helps the students understand the
concept of the color wheel. It helps the students with the comprehending content of the
color wheel, and is helps advance the conceptual understanding of the color wheel and
how it is used. This assessment tool is used because lot helps grade the academic
performance of the students on their activity sheet and also helps grade the students
performance in participating in the class activity.

4. LESSON OPENING/PURPOSE
The students will be able to understand the color wheel and how it works by
demonstrating their knowledge of primary and secondary colors. Like how you make
secondary colors by using which primary colors together. The students will be able to
use this knowledge on their coloring sheet/worksheet and demonstrate their recently
obtained knowledge.
Students, today we will be learning what the color wheel is, how it works, and why it is
the way it is. You will learn about primary and secondary colors and how you make them
and dont make them. I will use these flashcards, crayons, worksheets, and computer
program to teach and demonstrate how the color wheel works and its basics. At the end
of the lesson you will tell me in your own words what the color wheel is, how it works,
and also demonstrate this knowledge in the following activity sheet.
5. MOTIVATION FOR LEARNING
The type of motivation used in the lesson is a bit of both the intrinsic and extrinsic
motivation because the students have to think and grasp the concept of what a color
wheel is, how it works, and why it is the way it is making it intrinsic. They then have to
demonstrate that knowledge by completing an activity that demonstrate their
understanding of the color wheel making it extrinsic also.
I will make the lesson as interactive as possible engaging the students in conversation
on the lesson when possible. I will make it a fun activity with the coloring sheet that the
students will do after the lesson encouraging them to listen for instructions on how to
complete the coloring sheet. I will also put the best three colored sheets on the wall in
the classroom and give a reward for the top three also. This will encourage the students
to participate and engage actively in the lesson with the incentive I provided for them at
the end of the lesson.
6. LESSON BODY
Follow the steps provided in the text for the general lesson format. These first steps are
found in most all models.
Adjust this format to match the exact teaching model you are preparing according to the
model description provided in the text. Clarity is the key.
Step 1

The Concept Attainment model is recommended for teaching conceptual

knowledge, promoting students thinking skillsspecifically the ability to
discriminate and generalizeand introducing or assessing concepts. It is most

effective when used to teach concepts with clear critical attributes and when highquality examples of the concept can be identified and shared (Kilbane and
Milman, 2014, p. 119). This is how and what the color wheel lesson is based on
and how I would teach it to the students.
Step 2

Students, today we will be learning what the color wheel is, how it works, and why
it is the way it is. You will learn about primary and secondary colors and how you
make them and dont make them. I will use these flashcards, crayons, worksheets,
and computer program to teach and demonstrate how the color wheel works and
its basics. At the end of the lesson you will tell me in your own words what the
color wheel is, how it works, and also demonstrate this knowledge in the following
activity sheet.

Step 3

-I will present and example of the color wheel with the flash cards to the students
and explain what the color wheel is the way it is and why we have and use a color
wheel. I tell the students that there will be a fun activity at the end of the lesson to
make them more engaged in the lesson.
-I will also use a computer program to explain the primary and secondary colors
of the color wheel, how we use it and make the secondary colors, and why it is the
way it is.
-The students will them explain to me in their own words what the color wheel is
and what primary and secondary colors are and how they work.
-I will then hand out to the students the coloring/activity sheet and the crayons
and explain the instructions to the students on how to make a color wheel. I will
also give them and extra sheet for them to color to demonstrate their
understanding of the color wheel by using primary and secondary colors on the
2nd coloring sheet. I will then tell the students that the best colored color wheel
and 2nd activity sheet will be posted on the classroom wall and reward for the top
three also. This will make the students more eager to complete the activity sheet
and demonstrate their knowledge of the color wheel lesson.

Step 4

Guide Practice, Assess Performance, and Provide Corrective Feedback

Questioning What did you know about the color wheel before the lesson?
What did you learn about the color wheel after the lesson?
Correcting Errors- I will use the rubric listed above to grade the students
on their knowledge of the color wheel by seeing how they displayed it in
their coloring activity sheet.

Step 5

Assign Independent Practices, Assess Performance, and Provide Corrective

Feedback
I will then hand out the graded coloring sheets back to the students and
give them individual response on their activity sheet on the sheet with an
encouraging comment. I will also try to give extra coloring sheets as
homework and extra credit for the students to do as homework and in their
spare time so that they can practice coloring and continually apply their
knowledge of the color wheel for continual learning.

Step 6

Review Periodically Build in review of lesson in future lessons

(Provide ideas on how/when you might review the lesson)
- I would review this lesson when it would be time for me to explain the concept of
the color wheel to the students in the subject of art when it would be time for me

to do so. I would also use technology more as a learning tool for future lessons
for whichever subject and grade I would teach.

8. Reflective Thinking/Curriculum Evaluation _50 Points____

Reflection is a very important part of each lesson. Please take the time to thoughtfully
prepare your reflections. Follow the format provided below. Carefully edited and thorough
writing is expected.

SLOs- Candidates earning a master of science in education will be scholar practitioners who in the
context of the Christian worldview:
1. Demonstrate advanced understanding of the trends, issues, and research associated with education in
general and with their respective specialization.
2. Evaluate and conduct research to improve instructional practices and institutional cultures.
3. Employ leadership practices to optimize educational and institutional outcomes.
4. Articulate worldview and perspectives for enhancing student learning.

Reflective Statement for: Concept Attainment Model

SLO 2- Evaluate and conduct research to improve instructional practices and institutional cultures.
Relevance: Why is this assignment relevant to demonstrating your competence with this SLO?

This assignment is relevant because the theory under which this model falls under is the
Information Processing theory. The Information Processing theory is of great assistance
because it would assist a teacher in evaluating and conducting research, which could be
used to improve the instruction practices and institutional cultures of universities. Using
this theory as a foundation, as a future teacher I would be able carefully research teaching
strategies that would be of great assistance to me when teaching overseas. I would be able
to carefully acquire the best educational facts, skills, concepts, and strategies that would
improve my overall teaching styles and lesson plan when teaching English Language
Learners (ELL) in Asia. The ELL students would be able to experience a better language
learning experience due to the effective application of strategies that I have learned and
developed throughout my graduate education studies. I would then be able to guide
students towards a more accurate and complete knowledge and understanding of English
Language Learning. Additionally, I would be able to improve the instructional practices
due to the teaching strategies I had acquired throughout my university learning experience.
With the teaching strategies at the school being improved, I would then be able to improve
the institutional culture at the schools in regards to how they viewed and taught English to
language learners. However, this could only occur if the school would permit to improve
their teaching practices and change their institutional cultures because it would not be
5

possible unless I had the support of the teaching staff, school administration, and students.
Therefore, having a educational good foundation can determine whether or not a teacher
will be good at conducting educational research and also if the teacher will be able to
change the instructional practices and institutional cultures at their place of teaching.

Significance - Why is competence with this artifact significant for a professional educator? Using
careful analysis and evaluative thought:

Link to Theory - How is this artifact supported by a competent research base?

A competent research base supports this model because it falls under the umbrella of the
Information Processing theory. Under the Information Processing theory learning is viewed as an
acquisition of facts, skills, concepts, and strategies and learning occurs through the effective
application of strategies in the classroom environment. Teaching is viewed as a process of
transmission in which the teach guides the students toward a more accurate and complete
knowledge. The role of the teacher is also to teach and model effective strategies toward the
students and to correct any misconceptions the students might have on the educational strategies
being taught to them. Additionally, while students can only influence each other a little in this
theory the role of the student is to be an active processor of information while also organize and
reorganize information in order to better remember it. Furthermore, it is linked to the Big Idea
that learning is enhanced when learners engage in self-evaluation. When the students are
comprehensively monitored by the teacher this will allow them to engage in self-evaluation
which will make them want to be correct in the responses that they are given to the teacher. The
students will want to learn more in order to be sure that the responses they are giving are correct.
6

This will allow the teacher to use effective teaching strategies to transmit the educational
concepts to the students.
Resources/Technology- What technology did you select to support this lesson? Include interactive
applications and videos any/all technology suitable.

The technology that I used were videos from YouTube and tablets since these would be the most
helpful in an English Language Learning. These technology items benefited me the most based
on the lesson I would be present the class with.
Professional Actions/Areas for growth - What are your next professional steps in this area to keep
moving forward as a professional?

The next steps that I will take in order to keep moving forward would be to keep on learning
more educational teaching strategies that will enable to change instructional practices and
instructional cultures at any future location that I may work at that really needs the change for
the good of both the students and staff. However, cooperation will be needed from the staff and
students if this is to succeed because without support this educational reform will fail. Even if the
change does occur, I will still need to be willing to learn and adapt my teaching methods to fit
the needs of the language students. Additionally, wherever I go in Asia I will have to adapt my
teaching styles to fit the education standards of that country. This is because what works in China
might work in Japan and what works in Japan might not work in China and vice-versa.
Therefore, I will always need to learn the latest language teaching methods in order to be up-todate in the latest language teaching methods that I can use that will benefit my language students
the most. However, being a professional in the field of international education will require me to
keep learning by always improving and adapting my teaching styles and educational philosophy.
Therefore, being an educator will require the teacher to always be willing to improve and adapt
to the situation, which a good educator will always do and therefore continue to thrive in the
field of international education.
