Common Core State Standard(s)
4.NBT.6 Find whole-number quotients
and remainders with up to four-digit
dividends and one-digit divisors, using
strategies based on place value, the
properties of operations, and/or the
relationship between multiplication
and division. Illustrate and explain the
calculation by using equations,

Blackline Master, Division

Story Problem Journal Prompt

LEARNING STRATEGIES:

Alignment Lesson: Division Story Problems

1. Display/distribute Blackline Master, Story Problems to
Solve, and explain the task to students being careful not to
make sense of the problems for them.
2. Give students ample time to solve both of the problems using
the two different representations specified.
3. Strategically divide students into groups of 2 or 3 and
instruct them to each share their two solutions for each
problem. Do not spend more than 5-6 minutes on this step.
4. Explain that each group will create a final copy on chart
paper of one of their strategies for each problem to share
with the class. Each group will need to determine which
strategy they want to share for each problem. They will have
a final copy for each one of the problems, and they may
choose to highlight a different representation for each
problem.
5. As students are working, circulate and choose 2 groups for
each problem who will verbally share their final copies with
the class later in the lesson. Choose two different
representations for each problem.
6. Display final copies around the room and invite students to
take a quick Gallery Walk. Group solutions for Problem 1
separately from Problem 2 so students have an easier time
comparing the solution strategies.
7. Invite each of the groups of students you strategically
selected to share their final copies for Problem 1 and then
Problem 2. As students share, engage the class in Math Talk,
incorporating some of the following questions as
appropriate:

Do you agree/disagree with ______s solution strategy? Why or

why not?
Can someone restate how ______s group solved this problem?
What connections do you notice between the two different
representations?

8. Use the remaining time for students to practice and discuss

using Blackline Master, Story Problems Practice. For

Story Problems to Solve

Problem 1
A student who helps in the school store suggests selling folders to
students in packages of 6. How many packages of 6 folders can be made
from 378 single folders?

Problem 2
The parents who run the school store decide to buy a 9-pack of pencils for
every student in the school to thank them for supporting the school store.
If they purchase 2,259 pencils and all of them will be given to students,
how many students will receive a pack of pencils?

Individually, solve each problem using the following steps:

1. Reread the problem and determine what the problem is asking you
to find.
2. Predict/Estimate the solution.

Directions: Solve each division problem using a rectangular array/area model and the expanded
notation method.
1. David purchased 342 baseball cards at the store for himself and his friends. If he shares his
baseball cards evenly among himself and his 8 friends, how many baseball cards will each person
get?

2. The lower level of a sports stadium can seat 3,472 people. There are 8 equal sections of seats in
the lower level of the stadium. How many seats are in each section?

3. Mrs. Daniels bought 1,476 glasses to sell at the school fundraiser. She sold sets of 4 glasses for $1
a set. If she sold all her glasses, how much money did she make?

4. Mr. Raven has 294 golf tees from places he has visited around the country. He would like to
display them in cases on the wall. If he displays them in rows of 7, how many rows will Mr.

The rectangular array/area model and the expanded notation method both help me break the
dividend apart to find the quotient. For both methods, I find the quotient one place value at a time.
The difference is in how I record those partial quotients and keep track of my work. In the area
model, I record my partial quotients above the rectangles and keep track of my work in the
rectangles. In the expanded notation method, I record those same partial quotients above the
division bracket and keep track of my work below the dividend. All of the same steps are shown in
each method. The recording is just different.
