Children are not interested in small group play make sure the learning areas provide activities that meet the range of
childrens temperaments. Use a variety of textures in the play area. Provide a range of toys that have variety of use. (Caras Kit
p. 11)
WHY-Rationale: Children who engage in dramatic play typically how more advanced skills in seeing the perspectives of
others and in getting along with peers.

HOW to Prepare: What you need:
MATERIALS: hat, swim suit, books/magazines, ball, music, fish, blue blanket, seashells, sand toys, umbrella, cooler, water,
sunscreen, beach towels
Existing classroom props to use: White board, Wall, Tall Chair
Dress-up props: Hat, swim suits, sunglasses, binocular, beach bag
Literacy props: Some books or magazines, rules
Technology props: camera, binocular, phone
Music & Movement props: the sound of water hitting the shore line, ball, fishing
Math props: Counting the fish in the water. Counting the seashells
Science props: Different kinds of fish, seashells
Social Studies props: map, weather
Props to make (consider teacher-made & child-made): The fish in the water. Labels, fishing pole
Other props: beach towels, umbrella, cooler, water, sunscreen, brown paper for sand
TIME: 25 minutes
SETTING: small-group
SET UP/SPACE: carpet space/dramatic play interst area.
HOW to Teach:
Introduction (How will the children be involved in the planning & preparation of this center?): Raise your hand if you have ever
been the beach. What do you normally bring to the beach? I will make a list on the white board of what the children say.
Today we are going build our own beach and pretend we are there. I will then pull out the materials I have in my prop box and
cross them off the list we have created together. The children will help put up and take down the dramatic play area.
Teaching steps (What is available to children? How many can work there at a time? Is there a time limit? Will all children get a
chance to work in the center today? Share any limitations, expectations, or safety concerns.):
1. There can only be three children at the beach at one time.
2. All the toys at the dramatic play area will be available to sit on or use.
3. The time limit will be 15 minutes at the beach.
4. Throughout the day we will try and get any many people as possible to play there otherwise we will try again tomorrow.

Closure & Transition: What have you learned about packing and getting ready to go to the beach? Have the children take turns
bringing up the props saying what it is and why people might use it for at the beach. Now, sing the clean-up song so the children
know it is time to transition and clean up their area.
