Was there any damage?

Some major damage that was caused was the collapse
of the Cypress Viaduct which was a raised freeway
section in Oakland, interstate 880. This freeway had to
levels and because of how severe the earthquake was
the upper level collapsed and slammed down onto the
lower level crushing the cars on the lower level. This
bridge remained closed for over 2 months which
caused a lot of inconvenience for people.

Before and After

General Info
The Loma Prieta earthquake that hit San Francisco Bay
Area on October 17, 1989 gave no warning to the people
but it was a good thing that the World Series game was
happening during this time because this earthquake
occurred during rush hour and with the collapse of the
Bay Bridge many more people would have died.

Earth Crust Movement

This earthquake was caused by
the North American Plate and
Pacific Plate sliding past each
other at a Transform boundary. It
was also right on the San Andreas
fault where earthquakes happen
very often.

Was there any warning?

Before the Loma Prieta earthquake there wasnt
really any warning at all and still till this day
scientists argue about where the earthquake
occurred exactly. Also since then scientist have been
working to improve their technology so that they will
be prepared next time.
