Course Name:Sociological Research Method

The topic for week #13 is Research Methods. The student will be able to define research
question/s and hypotheses. They will be able to analyze research methods and administer a miniquestionnaire with their partners. This course is offered in the second year of an undergraduate
class in the department of Liberal Arts and Science at George Brown. The course last week
focused on reliability, validity, sampling, and inductive and deductive methods. The next class
will focus on how to analyze data (collected by students in the previous class). They will use the
software named Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) to analyze data. In addition,
they will be able to interpret data. By the end of this semester, students will be able to create their
own survey, collect data, analyze it, and prepare a research paper, which is due on 12 December
by midnight. Students do not require any accommodations for this lesson. However, all videos
will be captioned and materials will be also posted on BB for students access before and after
the class.

LESSON OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to
Define Research Question/s and hypothesis.
Analyze/ or 1 research methods (survey questionnaires)
Administer mini questionnaire with their partners.
MOTIVATION:
Activity # 1
First I will ask, why do we do research? I will let them write
down two things that come to their mind (I will provide them
different color cards to write down their answers)
Second, I will ask them to find a partner who has the same color
card that they have, and share the information with their partners.
Then, they will report back to a larger group. I will write down
their answerson a white board.
I will show them the answers for Why do we do research? and
make a point of connecting it to the students answers that they
shared.

Q & A in pair 5 minutes
First, I will hand out questions to the students and give them time Interactive lecture PP
to discuss them with their partners. Then I will show the video.
10 minutes
The video will give a general idea about research method. While
watching the video, students will work in pairs and answer the
following questions:
What is theory?
What is hypothesis?
In this video, what is an Independent Variable (IV) and what is a
Dependent Variable (DV)?
Then, they will report back to a larger group, I will write down
their answers on a white board.
PowerPoint:
For an in-depth knowledge on social research method, I will do
an interactive lecture. I will explicitly focus on theory, research
questions, and hypotheses directly related to the survey
questionnaire, which willbe administered by the students in the
practice segment.
PRACTICE:
Activity # 3:Pair Work
Students will find a partner and fill out the questionnairesin class.
While students are conducting the survey, I will go around and
make sure they are administering it in a right way.

APPLICATION:
Student will analyze the collected data in the next class.
They will also create their own questionnaires based on the topic
of their choice.
They will conduct their own research.
