Mathematics in elementary grades is the study of quantity, space, and change.

In grade
one there are four instructional areas they are: developing understanding addition, subtraction
and strategies within 20, developing the understanding of whole number and relationships and
place value, understanding linear measurement and measuring lengths, reasoning about attributes
of and composing and decomposing geometric shapes. In order to teach mathematics effectively
in elementary I need to know the basics of addition and subtraction. Elementary students start
learning addition in kindergarten. I need to know the terminology that is used to teach addition
and subtraction at any grade level. Along with addition and subtraction terminology I need to
teach the student what equal means. Also, in fourth grade students learn multi-digit
multiplications, fractions, and geometrical figures. In order to teach multi-digit multiplication I
would have to review what the students learned in the previous grade. I believe that teaching
multiplication to fourth graders would be easier because they should have learned it in third
grade. Also, I would need to know how to teach fractions.
In Math 107 the professor was very helpful but with the new Common Core standards the
way of teaching mathematics has changed. In Math 107 I learned how to find base value up to
ten. Also, I learned the divisibility rules, but I do not know in what grade this is taught. In Math
207 I learned geometry which I remember from high school and I learned all of the rules to
geometry. In class we also went over algebra. In my fieldwork class I learned about number
bombs, the students would divide a number to its lowest common factor, the students would also
use a tape diagram to demonstrate a number. I believe that all three classes helped me review
elementary math.
As a future teacher I need to be well prepared to teach mathematics to elementary
students. I am well prepared to teach addition and subtraction to first and second graders. I know

what terminology to use with them so they can understand how to add and subtract. Also, I feel
well prepared to teach how to find base up to 10. Another thing that I am prepared to teach is
number line, and multiplications. In order to be well prepared I need to review division to
understand how to explain it to students. I will also need to learn related words for division. Also,
I need to review fractions I am able to simplify fractions, but I have a difficult time with
multiplying fractions. I need to learn the rules of fractions to teach the students. With more
practice I will improve my skills.
In my portfolio I will be sharing my mathematics lesson plan that I will teach to a third
grade class. The lesson plan will show my knowledge of multiplication. It will also show that I
can write a lesson plan. Also, I will share a lesson plan that I did with a group for Math 107. The
lesson plan I did with the group is about addition and its for a first grade class. I had to teach this
lesson plan to my classmates and it shows that I have some experience being in front of the
classroom.
