PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND CONSULTING
Historian/Project Consultant The Worley Cemetery Community History
and Revitalization Initiative
This project is currently in the initial phases of cleanup and is a collaboration
between grassroots community activist Ervin Rainey and urban ministry
organization, Hope for the Inner City. The Worley Cemetery is located in the historic
neighborhood of Avondale in Chattanooga, Tennessee and is estimated to have
nearly 100 graves, 75 of which are unmarked. The purpose of this project is to
transform this abandoned site into a source point of civic pride for the underserved

African American community while providing students, history enthusiasts, and


genealogists, an outdoor museum to study local history through material culture.
Conduct historical research and provide expertise and support for grassroots
preservation including:
o Kickstarter fundraiser for ongoing maintenance after initial cleanup
including sponsor-a-grave.
o Develop a collaborative partnering with UTC History Club- research,
mapping, and identification support from students.
o Create social media presence through branding webpage, Facebook
and Vimeo for the purpose of soliciting donations, generating interest
in local history, and providing progress updates on the various phases
of the project.
o Partner with National Council on Public History as a guest blogger.
Coordinator, Great Lakes Region - American Merchant Marine Veterans
Oral History Project (as needed, ongoing)
This project was made possible by a grant received by The Seamens Church
Institute, the worlds largest mariners service organization. The primary goal of this
project is to record as many interviews as possible with veteran members of the
merchant marine from branches all over the country. At its core, this project is about
restoring the merchant marine to its rightful place within the historical record.
Facilitate collaborations with various institutions including veteran
organizations, historical societies, museums, schools and maritime-related
businesses
Support participants in the project with necessary materials including
questionnaire, recording tips, release forms.
Educate participants in the use of the archival software platform that allows
individual and intuitional partners to upload clips from the interviews and
display them alongside photographs and other digitized archival material.
Actively engage in community outreach to encourage active participation in
conducting interviews while driving traffic to the digital memory repository
housed on the SCI designated website.
Project Consultant -The African American Research Library and Cultural
Center (AARLCC) Teen Oral History Project (2009)
AARLC is located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and is one of three premiere research
libraries in the U.S. dedicated to the African American experience.
Development of an oral history workshop for the Youth Services Division that
served as an introduction to the basic techniques of researching and
conducting oral histories.
Provided young adults ages 12-17 with a casual learning environment for
gathering interviews from their extended family network as a way to develop
a deeper understanding of the ways families stay connected to each other
and their the communities.
Drafted learning modules for participants to use as a data gathering tool that
compared and contrasted the evolution of social and cultural values in their
families and communities.

Event Coordinator -The Red Hand Day Campaign, Fort Lauderdale, Florida
(2009)
A global initiative to stop the use of child soldiers in armed conflicts around the
world. The project included a lecture and red hand craft project at The African
American Research Library and Cultural Center and Whole Foods in Fort Lauderdale,
Florida. Over 125 red hands were collected at both locations and sent to the
United Nations in Geneva.
