Lesson Topic: Geographical Regions of WV: The Potomac Section
Lesson: 2
Purpose:

The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to a specific geographical


region of West Virginia (e.g. The Potomac Region), and to provide some basic
information about the region (e.g. facts, landmarks, and economic features)
Background:

This lesson will serve to provide the students with a better understanding of a
particular region of the state in which they live, and to provide some
background knowledge to help with their group projects.
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES/ STUDENT OUTCOMES:

Students will be able to locate the Potomac Section on a map.


Students will interpret images that relate to the regions economic
activities.
Students will discover some of the various locations and historical
landmarks of the Potomac Section.
Students will analyze various texts to discover and collect
information about a specific region of West Virginia.
Students will work collaboratively to produce a visual
storyboard/poster that relates to a particular geographical region of
West Virginia.
Big Ideas:

The Potomac Section was the first region to be settled in West


Virginia.
The Potomac Section has rich soil for producing fruit, and raising
livestock.
Understanding the historical significance of the Potomac Section

What part of West Virginia belongs to the Potomac Region?


Why do you think it is called the Potomac Region?
Has anyone ever heard of the Fairfax stone, if so what do you know
about it?
What do these photos tell you about life in the Potomac Region?
