Reflection

& Self Evaluation

DM1-In my lesson plans I always stressed the importance of
accepting one another for our strengths and weaknesses. I gave
them time to share about their unique life experiences. I taught
a lesson about multicultural music and how we all have come
from ancestors that have unique multicultural backgrounds.
They had assignments to research their ethnic background and
discover the music that lies within their gene pool. I often
demonstrated musical examples that were in foreign
languages, which helped the students realize that other
countries have beaten America in the race of refined music.

DM2-Technology was used on a daily basis. Sometimes we

used modern projectors to show pictures, movies, online music
games, scanned sight-reading exercises, etc. We also used a
smart board for movies and pictures. I used a prezi to show a
slideshow presentation. I used a microphone when talking
over 80 students in the giant concert choir at Dixie High

School. We used google forms to have students submit

assignments online. We used a website for our class
curriculum that helped with absent students and summarizing
our weekly classes. I used Power Teacher to submit grades and
communicate with parents.

DM3-I felt a bit awkward sometimes teaching this unit

because I created the lesson plans from scratch and I am a first
time teacher in a guini pig class called, Group Voice, but I
thoroughly enjoyed my experience with the students. I do feel
confident in the subject Matter and I know that I have many
valuable lessons to teach about singing solos in public live
performances.

DM4-I created a physically safe environment by making sure

the students did their practicing within the choir room,
practice rooms, and auditorium. I created an emotionally safe
environment by spending a lot of time trying to lift the self-
confidence of every individual in discussing his or her fears of

peer pressure. We showed appreciation for one another after

every person would sing or volunteer to do something outside
of their comfort zone. Some of my management strategies
involved fast pacing and planning of specific activity time. I
made schedules on my lesson plans, so that I knew to watch
the clock as we went along. Often when I would let the kids
break into groups I would forget to tell them what time the
activity was over and they needed to come back. I need to think
through those issues before I let them go anywhere. I tried to
do some of the same activities, so that the kids would know
what to expect the first half of class and then change it up after
that, so they wouldnt get too comfortable. One homework
strategy that I attempted to use was to give them feedback on
their assignments as soon as possible after they handed them
in. They didnt seem to really care about the feedback because
they were still handing in assignments till the last hour of the
term. If I had been a stickler on handing homework in on time

they all would have failed the class. Maybe the online
submitting of homework should have been changed half way
through the semester to in class paper handing in because they
were slacking on those Journal Entries a lot.

DM5-This teacher work sample has showed me just how to

prove whether or not I am doing a good job as a teacher. I love
that as I explain the problems I am having, ideas for new
solutions start to arise. I am glad to be in an environment
where nobody knows all the answers and we have to be
continually analyzing our patterns of behavior to see what is
improving our classrooms and what is not. I love using the data
of assessment to show the sub-culture that a classroom of
unique students has created.

DM6-I am a better teacher because of these lesson plans really

pushing me to think from different angles of teaching activities.
The lesson plans made me explain more to my students just
how does it all work. I came to a better understanding in a way

that Ive never known it before because I had to teach the

content instead of just research it. Ive seen how even the
greatest lessons will not reach a student unless the walls of
self-doubt and social fear have been broken down. I realized
that starting good daily habits is still a great ordeal for most
high school students. They have not yet discovered how to
organize their lives in a responsible fashion.
I have had the opportunity to meet with students and
their parents to help improve their learning environment. I
have learned about students and their incredible abilities to
adapt in difficult situations. I see more than ever how teachers
are like parents to students in need of a positive role model.
Teachers truly have the opportunity to change the world, by
influencing the next generation in an enthusiastic fun learning
environment.
