Richtermagnitudescale
FromWikipedia,thefreeencyclopedia

TheRichtermagnitudescale(alsoRichterscale)assignsamagnitudenumbertoquantifytheenergy
releasedbyanearthquake.TheRichterscaleisabase10logarithmicscale,whichdefinesmagnitudeasthe
logarithmoftheratiooftheamplitudeoftheseismicwavestoanarbitrary,minoramplitude.
Asmeasuredwithaseismometer,anearthquakethatregisters5.0ontheRichterscalehasashaking
amplitude10timesthatofanearthquakethatregistered4.0,andthuscorrespondstoareleaseofenergy
31.6timesthatreleasedbythelesserearthquake.[1]
