Name the lesson: Lesson Plan 5: Summarizing by TextMessaging Shakespeare

What technology is needed: A cell phone (basic or

smart) with the capability to take pictures and make a
phone call. Also a computer with Web access.

Age it is appropriate for: Ages 11-18, Grade 6-12

How would it be used: The English students will text

their 140-character summaries of the homework reading
from Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet to an interactive Web
screen.

What benefit does it have for students: Each student

can take on a particular character from the play and textmessage based on their characters thoughts and actions
from each scene. They can interpret the play in writing,
summarize scenes, work as groups, and be able to use text
messaging to demonstrate interpretation.

What benefit does it have for teachers: The teacher

can set up a new interactive text-messaging screen on his
or her Wiffiti account. The teacher can also go over mobile
safety and appropriate use and the teacher can project the
Wiffiti along with the information on how to text to the
screen. This use of technology is convenient for both the
teacher and the student and is also a fun way of learning.

Name the lesson: Lesson Plan 7: Using Basic Digital

Cameras to Engage Reluctant Writers

What technology is needed: Digital cameras

(standalone or contained in devices such as Nintendo DSi
or cell phone); computer loaded with software such as
PowerPoint, MS Photostory, or iMovie, (or even mobile
apps) that allow the creation of slideshows/podcasts;
printer

Age it is appropriate for: Ages 11-18, Grade 6-12

How would it be used: The technology will be used by

bringing the power of mobile learning into the classroom.
The students will be able to create slideshows and tell a
story.

What benefit does it have for students: The students

can write a description of the scenes to contrast a retelling

of a story. The can use the computer using the software or

they can use the mobile devices with appropriate apps.
This is a fun way of learning for the students and will make
their writing assignment seem less overwhelming,
especially for those students that struggle with writing.

What benefit does it have for teachers: The teacher

will have the advantage of using the story text in writing or
speech for later assessment, as needed. The teacher can
also give the advanced students a set of scenes created by
different groups and have them order the scenes to create
a narrative. This is an easy and organized way to teach and
offers less paper use for the teacher.
