Big Ideas:

What led to the US becoming an ally in WWII?


How were the Japanese people treated on the home front after the bombing of Pearl Harbor?
What was Roosavelts foreign policy?
How did the atomic bombs change the course of the war and the world?

Unit Goals and Objectives:


At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to:
Hold a debate about the effect of the Atomic bomb dropping and if it was the best solution
Be able to pick out various propaganda techniques and explain their effectiveness
Understand what foreign policy was and how it affected the US joining the war.
Unit Summary:
After the devastation of WWI, the world agreed to never have a war of that size again. Due to the extreme punishments on Germany, that dream
did not happen, and WWII ended up happening. This unit teaches students important details of WWII and how it changed the United States. The
US tried to remain neutral initially, much like they did in WWI. In this unit, the students will explore what led to the United States becoming
involved in WWII. They will learn about propaganda techniques, battles, and the war itself.
Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:
Brainstorming Activity- Quick write activity in
class. What punishments from WWI could
have paved the way for WWII?

Lesson 1

Formative:
Cram Flash Cards- to focus on propaganda
techniques vocabulary
iPad Lesson Plan- to check their understanding
of propaganda techniques
Lucid Chart- Compare and contrast the
concentration camps to the internment camps
Classroom Debate- Was the dropping of the
atomic bombs necessary to end the war?

Summative:
Project on WWIIs affect on the World- Prezi or
Powerpoint to discuss & hit key points.
Test/Exam- Summative over the whole unit.

United States to be forced into joining WWII.

Lesson Activities:
Working together with classmates in order to organize a cohesive
presentation about propaganda used in various videos from the WWII
era. Students should be able to describe what techniques were used
and their effectiveness to convey the artists message.

chart and summarizing
paragraphs. Ability to
participate in the debate.

Lesson Activities:
Debate on the necessity of dropping the atomic bombs on Japan.
Students should be able to form a clear opinion on why the bombs
were dropped and if it was truly necessary to drop them in order to
end the war. Students will collaborate with one another to make clear
points and try to win the debate by swaying the most people from an
initial vote on Socrative.
