Critical Care Clinical Conference

NURS 451 Clinical Management of Adult Health Nursing III

Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to utilize public speaking skills to deliver a professional
presentation to an audience of peers and/or health care professionals. The student groups will be
assigned a topic related to the specific unit on which the clinical group worked. The students will
utilize knowledge from the applied sciences, nursing research, applicable Standards of Practice
and principles of adult learning to facilitate the presentation.
Student Approach to Assignment
The topic of restraints was chosen for this assignment due to all of the members having
had the opportunity to care for a patient whom had restraints ordered during the clinical rotation.
This assignment presented the opportunity to research a topic in order to be proficient in teaching
our peers. This topic allowed for the understanding of why and when restraints will be ordered.
Reason for Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio
This assignment is included in the portfolio because it introduces an intervention
commonly used in critical care scenarios and demonstrates many of the core competencies of the
end-of-program outcomes.
! Nursing Practice
" Demonstrates an awareness of complementary modalities and their usefulness in
promoting health.
# Example: For this assignment, restraints are discussed in regards to their significance
to the intensive care environment to promote patient safety, for example, by
preventing patients from removing tubes. How to properly tie restraints is
demonstrated to ensure correct nursing practice and safety of the patient. We also
indicated measures that can be used to reduce patient agitation, such as
communication, reassurance, and reducing environmental stimuli.
! Communication
" Expresses oneself and communicates effectively with diverse groups and disciplines using
a variety of media in a variety of contexts.
# Example: This assignment was an oral presentation to peers and faculty that utilized
PowerPoint, posters, and return demonstration of tying restraints. We received full
credit on this assignment.
! Teaching
" Provides teaching to patients and/or professionals about health care procedures and
technologies in preparation for and following nursing or medical interventions.
# Example: In this assignment, we taught fellow classmates and presented to faculty the
indication of restraints in intensive care settings.

" Provides relevant and sensitive health education information and counseling to patients,
and families, in a variety of situations and settings.
# Example: During this presentation, we provided the relevance and sensitive education
information needed for the use of restraints in the intensive care setting. We identified
the need to educate patients and families as to the indication for the restraints, to
prevent any negative perceptions to restraints.
" Uses information technologies and other appropriate methods to communicate health
promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention across the life span.
# Example: For this assignment, we used PowerPoint and posters as visuals to
supplement our teaching of reducing patient-induced risks by using restraints.
" Uses information technologies and other appropriate methods to enhance ones own
knowledge base.
# Example: For this assignment, we looked up hospital protocols and policies regarding
the use of restraints to enhance our own knowledge. We were able to identify three
that we found on the unit of our clinical experience at Riverside Regional Medical
Center.
! Research
" Evaluates research that focuses on the efficacy and effectiveness of nursing interventions.
# Example: For this assignment, we evaluated research on the effectiveness of using
restraints in the intensive care setting. We found that there is a balancing act
between being legally responsible for patient safety and maintain patient autonomy.
However, patient safety usually trumps all.
" Shares research findings with colleagues.
# Example: This assignment allowed for a great opportunity to share research findings
with colleagues. Other than the research indicating the importance of promoting
patient safety by using restraints, we found that there is inadequate assessment for
indication of restraints after they have been initiated. Also, research highlighted the
need to educate patients and families on the rationale behind using restraints in this
setting.
