Again, my apologies for the delay in getting you these data. For Fall 2009 there were 221 students who
used AP scores to place out of ENG110. Most of these students were new freshmen, though a small
handful were transfer students. Based on this, I think it may be reasonable to say that about one-eighth of
new freshmen use AP credit to place out of ENG110. The score distribution by AP exam is in the table
below:

AP Exam Score 3 4 5 Grand Total

ENLG 68 20 5 93
ENLT 83 39 6 128
Grand Total 151 59 11 221

At your request, I also ran correlations between AP scores and ACT English and WRPT English scores
for the 221 students included above; as not all students took each test, there were fewer than 221 students
in each group. Given the truncation in the AP test score range, I would consider the correlations with the
AP test scores to be moderate and the correlation between WRPT and ACT to be strong; they are all
statistically significant at the p < .001 level.

AP ENG Score ACT Engl Score WRPT Score

AP ENG Score Pearson Correlation 1 .343** .473**
Sig. (2-tailed) .000 .000
N 215 215 199
ACT Engl Score Pearson Correlation .343** 1 .687**
Sig. (2-tailed) .000 .000
N 215 215 199
WRPT Score Pearson Correlation .473** .687** 1
Sig. (2-tailed) .000 .000
N 199 199 199
**. Correlation is significant at the 0.01 level (2-tailed).

I will keep this request on my list to follow up with additional years of data when I am able. Thank you
again for your patience.
