Competency Reflection

Competency 001 focuses on a principals ability to shape a campus culture and

developing a shared vision of learning. Greene has a shared vision of encouraging student
literacy. I worked with our librarian with hopes of enhancing library night. We decided the goal
for these night would be to encourage parent involvement in student literacy, assist parents in
choosing appropriate books for their children, and modeling read alouds. These goals are
centered on our campus vision of literacy for our students. Greene is a diverse campus and
students read on various levels. Parent involvement is vital to our students becoming successful
readers. It is important for our parents to feel comfortable reading and discussing books with
their children. Library Night offers parents access question myself as well as other teachers
about literacy in a comfortable nonthreatening environment. We want parents to feel supported
and know the great impact they can have on their childrens ability to read.
Competency 002 emphasizes the need for principals to communicate and collaborate with
all members of the school community. While planning and organizing materials for our
Multiplication Home and School Connection I collaborated with Greenes instructional math
coach, Cyndi Wall. Once the date had been determined we then began to focus on the
multiplication games we would introduce to parents and students. We made the decision to use
Circles and Stars, Tic-Tac Toe by Six, and Making Arrays. Most of these stations have been
utilized in classrooms Therefore, the students could easily remind their parents the rules of the
game. Mrs. Wall and I worked together to create an agenda and determine how each activity
would be presented to the audience. We also gathered the materials needed for each participant.
Working with school members outside of my team allowed me to gain understanding of the
details surrounding after school events.

Competency 003 focuses on a principals ability to act with integrity, fairness, and in an
ethical manner. When working with school members to arrange school functions it is important
for me to act with integrity. I worked to always have open communication with each person I
collaborated with while arranging Library Night and the Home and School Connection. It was
important to me that our librarian and instructional math coach trust me to gather and disperse
necessary materials in a timely manners. It is important to behave in an ethical and professional
manner in all capacities of my role as an educator.
Competency 004 highlights a principals ability to design and implement curriculum and
enhance teaching and learning with strategic planning. As an educator, I work hard to stay in
touch with research based programs to enhance student learning. We are fortunate at Greene to
have professional development with our instructional coaches throughout the school year. While
preparing for our Home and School Connection my math coach and I used data to decide the
topic. Our students have struggled to know their multiplication facts fluently. We chose games
to use that would enhance our students ability to recall multiplication facts.

I also introduced

these multiplication games as math stations in my classroom. These stations enhanced my

students knowledge of multiplication facts and they had fun while learning.
Competency 005 stresses the importance of the knowing how to advocate, nurture, and
sustain an instructional program that are conducive to student learning and staff professional
growth. As a third grade teacher, I spend a lot of time looking over assessment data. After
examining benchmark data I realized having time to plan with our instructional coaches would
benefit my teaching and student learning. I helped plan a professional day for my team where
we would be able to work with our instructional coaches to plan for the upcoming nine weeks.
During this planning session we used our benchmark data to drive our instruction.

Competency 006 states a principal should know how to implement a staff evaluation and
development system to improve all staff members. As an intern I have not had the opportunity to
observe another teacher in an evaluative manner. However, I am a mentor to a new teacher.
Through the mentor program I have modeled lessons, observed her teaching, and given her
feedback. I also mentored a student teacher this semester where I was able to give more
evaluative feedback regarding the lessons I observed.
Competency 007 discusses the need for principals to be organized and have the ability to
solve problems and make decisions to ensure the environment is conducive for student learning.
I have worked closely with my principal when considering student data and how to enhance
student learning. Currently, our students are struggling in reading. This is an area where our
students usually excel. It is important for teachers and principals to work closely to solve any
and all issues. Especially, when making decisions to improve student learning.
Competency 008 calls attention to a principals ability to manage the campus budget,
personnel, resource utilization, financial management, and technology use. While planning for
Library Night I consulted with our school secretary in regards to snacks we were providing. I
had to plan ahead of time and gain required permission to use school funds for this event. It is
important for administrators to appropriate campus funds for school activities. Principals need to
be aware of how all school funds are allocated and spent.
Competency 009 focuses on a principals ability to apply principles of leadership and
management to ensure their schools are safe and secure to enhance the learning environment.
While planning for Library Night and the Home and School Connection it was important for me
to keep all staff members aware of the details for each of these events. I placed flyers for each

event in our teachers mail boxes. I also emailed the teachers to give them specific details about
each event.
