Chapter 2 Reflection

Chapter 2, Technology and Learning covered the many ways to accurately help master
and enhance student learning through technology. Of the sub sections in the chapter, I found the
section Technology to Reinforce Learning most interesting and relatable.
Although I havent begun my field experience for my college career yet, prior to
graduating high school I took a childhood development class which required us to visit an
elementary school 4 times out of a 5 day school week. I specifically was assigned to a rowdy and
smart 3rd grade class, instructed by 30 year veteran, teacher Mrs.Tooley. While there, I noticed
that the school used many, many types of technology to teach their students the material, rather
than using traditional methods (books, pencils, paper work, etc.) used during my upbringing. Not
only did they use new and great technology to teach the children, but they used the technology to
allow the children to teach themselves the same material, just in ways that were best for them,
using their school issued technology. A specific example of a time the students used the
technology to reinforce information involved a time where after the teacher delivered the
material, the students were then all sitting around a SMART board and played a math game as a
group, using the smart board and taking turns playing a game teaching them how to add. The
chapter reminded me of this perfect example of how to use and reinforce technology in the
learning atmosphere.

Another interesting subsection inside of the chapter I found interesting and actually
wanted to know more about while reading was titled Psychological Factors. Although many
teachers do say physical features such as noise, movement, temperature, light and other
distractions can really make a difference about how a student learns, I wasnt 100% sure that
those things could be THAT much of a distraction to students. After reading this part of the
chapter, it was extremely clear that those things do affect the way students learn. Something just
as little as the light being too dim, or too bright affects their ability to be able to grasp and fully
understand information.

By reading this chapter, ive really grasped more of an understanding of ways and styles
influence how students learn. It helped me form my own opinions about how theoretical learning
should be executed. It made it very clear that although there are many different types of learners
jumbled up into one classroom, there are ways to reach each and every student.
I plan to use what ive read in this chapter in the classroom by reducing all distractions in
the classroom as much as possible. The largest thing ive gotten out of this chapter, was really
how distractions can totally keep a child from getting what you are teaching, ultimately leaving
you as a teacher unsuccessful at delivering what you wish to deliver to the student, and the
student behind.
