Teacher Candidate: Morgan Chambers

Subject/Grade: Kindergarten/Science

Lesson # _5__
Date and Time of Lesson: Afternoon line

Learning Objective: The students will be able to design and construct their own birds nest from
materials found in the environment.
Alignment with Standards:
K.S.1A.2 Develop and use models to (1) understand or represent phenomena, processes, and
relationships, (2) test devices or solutions, or (3) communicate ideas to others.
EEDA- Students will design and construct models based on their own ideas
Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections:
Social- Students will be able to view and see other students bird nest designs and share with the
class
Emotional- Students will be actively engaged in the lesson and during the exploration
Physical- Students will be exploring on the schools nature trail as they search for materials to
build their nest.
Cognitive- Students will use their own ideas to design their own birds nest

Assessment(s) of the Objectives:

Lesson Objective

Assessment of the Objective

Use of Formative
Assessment

The students will be able to

design and construct their
own birds nest from
materials found in the
environment.

Using previously learned

knowledge about what types
of materials birds use to
construct their nest, students
will design and draw their
own birds nest design and
list the materials they would
use. After the students have
designed their nest, they will
be given a bag and taken to
explore the nature trail to
find materials to construct
their own designs.

Data received from this

activity will help to guide
the direction needed for
further instruction.

K.S.1A.2

Accommodations: For students who finish early, they will be allowed to get their book bags
and read until all students have finished working. For students who may need help, they can raise
their hand and ask for help since the teacher is not directly teaching at that point in the lesson.
The student with cerebral palsy will be assisted by his shadow on the nature trail with any help
he may need collecting materials.

Materials:
Science notebooks
Pencil box
Plastic bag
Procedures:
Motivation techniques- To gain the interest of the students, they will be given the opportunity

to become engineers and design and construct their own birds nest.
Grouping- This lesson will be taught as a whole group and the work done by the students will be
independently. As a whole class, the students will take a trip to the nature trail to collect materials
to construct their designs.

Instructional strategies- 1. Students will be asked what kinds of materials different types
of birds use to construct their nest. 2. Students will be introduced to a new word design
and told that they can create their own birds nest using whatever types of materials they
wish. 3. Students will create a design in their science notebooks of the type of nest they
want to create. 4. After designing their nest, students will be given a plastic bag and will
take a trip on the nature trail to collect any materials to use in the construction of their
design.
Probing question- What kind of bird is going to live in your nest? What is your nest
made out of?
Lesson closure- Upon returning to the classroom, students will place their bags of
materials in their cubbies. They will use these materials to construct their nest the next
day during afternoon line.

Activity Analysis:

Activity 1- During this part of the lesson, students will use their ideas to design their own
birds nest in their science notebook. This part of the lesson supports the lesson objective
because it allows the student in creatively think and design their own sketch of their birds
nest. This portion of the lesson supports the lesson objective because it allows the
students to creatively design their own sketch nest that they will create. This activity also
supports the students need to be able to express their creativity and individuality in their
designs. During this portion of the lesson, technology will not be used because students
will be designing their nest in their science notebooks.

Activity 2- After activity 1, students will be given a plastic bag and will take a trip to the
nature trail where they will explore and collect materials to construct their birds nest
design. This part of the lesson supports the lesson objective, because it allows the
students to collect materials on their own that they will use to construct their design. This
activity supports the students needs and characteristics by allowing them to go outdoors
and while also learning through the environment. During this part of the lesson
technology will not be used because the students will be outside exploring in the
environment and using natural resources to construct their designs.
