Activity Title: Passing a Bill (online resource)

Year Level: 6
Activity Overview:
During this activity the students will utilise ICT in order to explore
the process of passing a bill through parliament. Students will
choose the bill they would like to pass and make decisions to pass
the bill. Students will be required to work individually, however they
are allowed to discuss their progress and queries with the students
next to them as well as the teacher.
Student Prior Knowledge:
Students have previously engaged with the importance of
laws, how they are implemented, and their impact of society.
Students have a basic knowledge of the organisation of
parliament, have engaged in activities to further this
knowledge, and are familiar with the functions of positions
within parliament.
Teacher Prior Knowledge:
Teachers should have an understanding of the organisation of
parliament, positions held within the parliament, and their
significance in passing a bill.

Activity Process:
1. Students sit at computers (desktop or laptop). Students will be
working individually for this activity
2. The teacher explains that this activity is going to demonstrate
the process of passing a bill in parliament
3. Students log in to computers and open open Pass the Bill on
http://www.peo.gov.au/learning/kidsview.html
4. Students follow the online instructions to choose a bill and
pass in through parliament
5. Students reflect on their progress with this topic by answering
the following questions in their workbooks:
What have I learnt?
What would I like to learn?
I will know I am getting better when
Modifications:
The teacher or teacher aide will assist students with
difficulties by helping them to navigate the website and
activity.
Some students may also require the instructions to be read
aloud to them because of the complex vocabulary used in
some sections of the resource.
