Inquiry: What is the relationship between technology and the development of our youth?
Proposed thesis: Technology such as social media has an overall negative effect on the
academic and personal development of our youth.
Terry, Laura, Punya Mishra, Danah Henriksen, Leigh Graves-Wolf, and Kristen
Kereluik. "The Reciprocal Relationship between Technology and Psychology."
(2013). Print.
This is a source that I chose to justify the basis of my argument. The authors go in depth
regarding the psychology behind the users of the technology. In order for people to
understand how the various types of technology affect people and their relationships, its
imperative that the readers can understand what is going through the minds of said
people. This source is sure to be credible because its been peer-reviewed. This source
shows the delicate relationship between technology and psychology. I can use this to
analyze whether that relationship beneficial or not for the future.

This source is a video documentary that talks about how the education environment must
be adapted to the learner of today. The video illustrates the differences between the
development of the previous generations and the youth of today. The information is up to
date somewhat (composed in 2009) so I consider this to be relevant to not only the time,
but also my specific topic. The video originally aired on PBS, a completely credible
company that is known for their authenticity. I chose this source because it analyzed both
the social and academic development of the students at this high school. I saw this video
a couple of years ago so I am somewhat familiar with the material. Having a source that
you can look at in two different lights is more useful in my opinion. This time around I
was more intrigued, because the first time viewing the video was for a school assignment.
Subrahmanyam, Kaveri. Digital Youth : The Role of Media in Development. Springer,
2011. Print.
Digital media, such as computers, the Internet, video games, and mobile phones, have
come to occupy a central place in the lives of todays youth. For those of us in contact
with them parents, teachers, physicians, researchers, and others evidence of this is
plentiful. This quote is a representation of the key idea that that can be used as the main
topic of my argument. One of the first things that I wanted to do was acknowledge the
presence and affect that technology has on people and particularly the youth. This is a
book that is even more up to date and there for points in the direction of it being credible
and relevant. I think that its important that this source was created during the spike of the
use of social media and smartphones. I can use this source because I have the ability to

recognize the changes between the time this piece was composed and the information and
statistics that are available to me today.
Gardner, Howard, and Katie Davis. The App Generation: How Today's Youth
Navigate Identity, Intimacy, and Imagination in a Digital World. Yale UP, 2013. Print.
This source is even more up to date and concentrated than the other sources and therefore
could be very valuable. This is a book that was composed by a group of Yale University
professors and subsequently reviewed by some of their peers. I trust that someone has
been through an application process and obtained a position as a professor, specifically at
Yale University can be considered to be legitimate source, which, coupled with the fact
that the source has been reviewed absolve any doubts that this source may be illegitimate.
I think that the categories that the author broke the book into will be helpful as I conduct
my research. I intend to explore the development of the youth in multiple areas, rather
then just academically.
Varjas, Kris, Joel Meyers, Sarah Kiperman, and Alice Howard. Technology Hurts?
Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Youth Perspectives of Technology and Cyberbullying.
Journal of School Violence, 2013. Print.
This is different from the other sources in that its purpose is to provide a negative point of
view of technology. In order to properly construct my argument, its imperative that I can
understand and express both sides. This particular source is into a journal that is reviewed
by a group of peers, establishing its credibility. This is the final cog in the formulation of
my paper. I think that all of these sources together will help me put together an essay that
will appropriately assess the effects that technology has on the development of the youth
and subsequently determine rather that effect is negative or positive. I hope that my
findings will be able to persuade the reader to sharing my opinion, which is that it is
overall detrimental.
