Question 1
4 out of 4 points

Project team Alpha has accumulated $5,000 of expenses as of the end of week#10. The
budgeted cost of work scheduled for Week #10 is $6,500. The project has one task, which is
about 45% complete at the end of week #10. Calculate the schedule and cost variances. Is the
project ahead (or behind), and under (over) budget?

Selected Answer:
ACWS = $5000
BCWS = $6500
BCWP = .45(6500) = $2925
Schedule Variance = 2925 - 6500 = - $3575
Cost Variance = 2925 - 5000 = - $2075
So the project is behind by $3575 in work done and is over budget by
$2075.

Question 2

Which member of the design team should prepare the project plan and why?
Selected
Answer:

Response
Feedback:

Everyone that is going to be working on the project should help to plan it. This
is because the people who are going to do the actual work have a good
understanding of what that work involves and the time it takes to do the work,
which is extremely helpful in the planning stages.

3 main outcomes would be: Production drawings, bill of materials, and

manufacturing process specifications.

(1) Obtain detailed understanding of customer and company requirements.

(2) Establish alternative concept design.
(3) Develop alternative configuration design.

Question 4

Of the four stages of Team Development, which two specific stages best represent

brainstorming in Concurrent Engineering? Briefly explain your answer.

Selected
Answer:

Response
Feedback:

I think norming and performing best represent brainstorming in Concurrent

Engineering. This is because during the norming stage group members begin to
work with each other and focus on a common goal, and in the performing stage
members share accountability and conflicts are resolved openly.

Storming and Norming: Team members sort out their differences during the
Storming stage. In the Norming stage, they focus on achieving common goals
and communicate openly.

The stage of Forming comes before brainstorming, as the team must be formed
before they can be deemed to be concurrent.
The stage of Performing is past brainstorming, as this stage involves execution
of the plans/strategies which were developed during the Norming

Ethics are becoming a large concern in Engineering and for good reason. Bad
ethics in engineering can lead to things such as the challenger disaster, where a
flawed O-ring design led to the deaths 7 astronauts. The problem is when
people see a flaw or potential problem and don't report or correct the problem
for reasons such as it costing too much or not wanting to take responsibility for
the flaw. By having strong ethical values such as honesty, integrity, loyalty, and
responsibility can help ensure that we take the ethical high road so to speak.
