WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT

REGIONS OF THE BRAIN & WHAT

ARE THEIR FUNCTIONS?
DO NOW: While watching the Pinky & The Brain video
Parts of the Brain, which will be played TWICE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snO68aJTOpM

1)Try

and catch as many brain region names as possible, WRITE

THEM DOWN!
2)Have you ever heard of any of the regions mentioned? If so, which
one (s)?
3)Just by hearing some of the names of the regions of the brain,
what everyday functions do you think the brain may be
responsible for?

THE HUMAN BRAIN

(BIRDS EYE VIEW)

Left Hemisphere

AMNH

The brain is divided into two sections by what seems to be right down the middle.
This line separating the left and right hemisphere is called the midsagital line.

LEFT HEMISPHERE
The left hemisphere is dominant in language:
processing what you hear and handling most
of the duties of speaking.
It's also in charge of carrying out logic and
exact mathematical computations. When you
need to retrieve a fact, your left brain pulls it from
your memory.
The left brain only controls the right side of the
world.

EXAMPLE:

You wink your right eye- left brain

controls that.
NOTE: Left brain is sensitive to fast changing
processes/fast events

RIGHT HEMISPHERE
The right hemisphere is mainly in charge of
spatial abilities, face recognition and
processing music.
It performs some math, but only rough
estimations and comparisons.
The brain's right side also helps us to
comprehend visual imagery and make sense
of what we see.
It plays a role in language, particularly in
interpreting context and a person's tone.

Right

Hemisphere controls both sides of the

world.

BRAIN ANATOMY

FUNCTION

The four major lobes of the brain are the frontal lobe,
parietal lobe, occipital lobe, and temporal lobe.
These lobes are located in a major part of the brain
called the Cerebral Cortex or Cerebrum

Frontal Lobe- reasoning, planning, parts of speech

movement, emotions, and problem-solving.
Parietal Lobe- touch, pressure, temperature and pain
Occipital Lobe- Vision or in other words sight!
Temporal Lobe- Hearing and memory

LETS DIG DEEPER!

Before even learning what these regions are responsible for, take a
minute to look at some of the names of the regions. 1. What might the
region you chose be involved in? 2. a) What lobe might this region lie
in? b.) What makes you say that?

WERE YOUR GUESSES CORRECT?

Pre-Frontal

Cortex: regulates thoughts in terms of both short-term and longterm decision making. It allows humans to plan ahead and create strategies!
(Frontal Lobe)

Brocas

Area: Language & speech! (Frontal Lobe)

Auditory

Cortex: Hearing! (Temporal Lobe)

Motor

Cortex: Voluntary movement (movement you have control over)! Ex: Walking
(Frontal Lobe)

Sensory

Cortex: Interpreting sensory information (things you feel) from various

parts of the body! (Parietal Lobe)

Einsteins

Area: Abstract thinking, or in other words learning general of conceptual

things! (Parietal Lobe)

Wernicks

Lobe)

Visual

Area: comprehension of speech and language development! (Temporal

Cortex: Vision! (Occipital Lobe)

MEMORY GAME
In groups of two, play the memory game! But first, put all your notes
away!
Instructions:
1. There are a series of laminated cards on the desk. One side has a
highlighted region of the brain. The other side has the correct answer.
It could be any of the regions you learned about today, but its your job
to try and remember what the region is called and what its
function is.
2. You and your partner will decide who will take a go at the game first,
so identify yourself as Player 1 or Player 2. You will alternate
between each other. Player 1 will be shown the brain region by Player
2. Player 2 will determine whether or not Player 1 answered correctly,
and then you swap roles depending on whose turn it is!
3. Challenge: Identify as many of the regions and its function correctly!
