Rationale

Thislessonisdesignedtointroducestudentstothevarietyofthings
thatcanbeencompassedbytheideaofculture.Havingstudents
presentculturalartifactstotheirclassmatesisengagingforthe
studentsandhelpsbuildaclassroomcommunity,aswellasgiving
concreteexamplesofthedifferentcomponents(music,art,food,
literature,etc.)ofaculture.Thiswillmakesstudentsawareofthe
differentpartsoftheculturetheycanstudywhentheybegintowork
ontheirglobalcommunityproject.Thislessonisalsousefulfor
helpingstudentsbegintheresearchprocessbythinkingaboutthe
differentaspectsoftheirownculture.Asexpertsintheirown
culture,studentswillfeelconfidentabouttheupcomingproject,as
wellasmorefamiliarwithculturestheymightnothaveknownmuch
about.Asthisactivityinvolvesthepresentationofpersonalmaterial,
classdiscussionswilladdresstheideaofrespectandtolerance
towardsculturesotherthanyourown.
