Complete the review by attaching the definitions and answers written on another
sheet of paper. Answer all of the questions by writing your answer, but you do not
have to write anything for the Make sure you know and Be able toquestions.
Section 1- Literary Elements and Devices
1. What is plot? Main event: The start, or exposition, is where the characters
and setting are being told.
2. What are the parts of a plot diagram? Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Rising
Action, Resolution.
3. What is setting? Where the story takes place.
4. What is foreshadowing? Prediction of a future event.
5. Why do authors use foreshadowing? It adds dramatic tension.
6. What is a flashback? Set in a time earlier than the main story
7. What is a protagonist? Antagonist? Protagonist- Hero Antagonist- villain
8. What is tone? The attitude of the author
9. Make sure you can analyze the tone of a passage.
10.How does the author create tone? Uses words to describe people
11.What is mood? How the person thinks or feels.
12.What is diction? The choice and use of words and phrases in speech or
writing.
13.What is point of view? Perspective in which the story is told.
14.What is 1st person POV? 3rd person? Omniscient? 1 person is a story being
told by a character. 3 person is when the story is being told by the narrator.
Omniscient knows everything about the characters.
15.What is an archetype? It is a pattern that is repeated.
16.List 3 common archetypes found in literature. Theme, a symbol, or a setting.
17.What is an inference? A conclusion based on the text
18.What is theme? The topic of the text
19.What is figurative language? A simile? Metaphor? Personification?
Hyperbole? Figurative Language= is figurative when is non-literal Simile=
comparison using like or as. Metaphor=a comparison NOT using like or as.
Personification=non-human object is given human qualities. Hyperbole=an
exaggeration.
20.Make sure you can analyze figurative language.
21.What are the two main types of conflict? Internal and External
22.Make sure you can identify imagery.
23.What is textual evidence? Is the evidence that something is true.
24.Be able to identify rhyme scheme.
25.What is it called when a poem has no set rhyme scheme?
26.What is anaphora? The repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of
successive clauses.
27.What is denotation? The literal or primary meaning of a word,
28.What is connotation? an idea or feeling that a word invokes

describe, information, or inform.
2. What is persuasive writing? Persuasive writing is a form when trying to
convince someone.
3. What is a thesis statement? Contains the focus of your essay
4. What is ethos? Pathos? Logos? Ethos is an appeal to ethics, Pathos is an
appeal to emotion Logos is an appeal to logic,
5. What is a rhetorical question and why is it used? Its usually defined as any
question asked for a purpose other than to obtain the information the

6. What is empirical evidence? What is anecdotal evidence? Empirical evidence
is information that is acquired by observation or experimentation. Anecdotal

words in a poem.
Section 4- Book Thief
Make sure you have read the whole book!
1. What are the major themes of The Book Thief? Rules are meant to be broken,
You cant trust no one you have to believe in yourself
