Summary
The inscribed columns of Demetrias were found during the excavations by Ap.
Arvanitopoulos at the towers of the city wall of Demetrias during 1908-1920. Ail
of the columns are been kept in the Archaelogical Musum of Volos and
comprise the greatest collection of ancient gravestones bearing samples of
hellenistic painting.
The study of the gravestones furnished us with a multitude of information not
only about the monuments themselves but also about ancient Demetrias as a
whole.
That information correspond to:
1) The form, type standard and the manufacturing technique of gravestones.
2) The dating of Demetrias1 city wall repair, which is derived from the dating of
the gravestones used as building material in tower repair.
3) The identity and nationality of the dead and the social make up of the ancient
city as seen in the gravestones and scriptures.
4) The painting technique and the use of colour on marble which is the
advancement of painting technique developed since the 6 th century B.C. and
which was practiced by simple craftsmen of workshops, on cemetery entrances in
every ancient city, not giving in to mimicry of famous artists. Instead they
showed freedom, imagination adapted to the requirement and aesthetics of the
people.
