Content:
3.3.4.B1: Identify planets in our solar system and their basic characteristics.
Describe the earths place in the solar system that includes the sun (a star), planets,
and many moons. Recognize that the universe contains many billions of galaxies and
that each galaxy contains many billions of stars

LESSON TOPIC: Planets
OBJECTIVES:
Language:
Students will be able to visually and verbally represent their interpretation of each of the
vocabulary words.
Students will be able to define each of the vocabulary words.
Students will be able to create their own planet using key vocabulary words.

Content:
Students will learn about the earth and space. they will learn about various topics such as
rotation, planets and stars. students will engage in an activity that shows the earth, sun
and moons rotation.
Students will be able to list the planets in order from the sun.

LEARNING STRATEGIES: KWL chart, story writing


KEY VOCABULARY: solar system, planet, star, moon, atmosphere
MATERIALS: smartboard, smart exchange program, scissors, crayons, glue, paper fasteners,
planet order worksheet, story worksheet

MOTIVATION:
(Building background)
Key vocabulary: solar system, planet, star, moon, rotation, orbit
Activate prior knowledge by asking what students know about earth- KWL chart
Ask student to draw what they believe each of the vocabulary words looks like. Then show the
students what they actually look like using pictures.

PRESENTATION:

Give out worksheet with the order and a picture of the planets from the sun and have students
cut out planets and put them in order
Show video resource (Drake and Josh planet song)
Show smartboard exchange powerpoint
Go into detail about a planet, star, moon and the order of the planets in the solar system and tell
students to follow along with their worksheet

PRACTICE AND APPLICATION:

Go into the characteristics of a planet (revolution, rotation, distance from the sun, number of
moons, atmosphere
Students will use their vocabulary to write their own story about their own planet. Students can
use creativity to makeup their own name, what lives on the planet, the color of the planet while
including the characteristics of an actual planet.
Students will create their own model to show how the earth orbits the sun while the moon travels
around the earth.

REVIEW AND ASSESSMENT:

Students will fill out the "L" part of the KWL chart to assess what they have learned during the
lesson
