WHAP: The Test

The AP Exam in World History

What You Need To Bring
: If you prefer your own writing utensils (but some will be available):
(1) #2 Pencils (
not
mechanical!) for multiple choice
(2) dark blue or black ink pens for essays
What You May Want To Bring
: (1) something to drink
(2) something to eat (you get a 10-minute break)
(3) a light jacket
(4) a watch (it cannot beep or have any kind of alarm on it)
Timing
: 3 hours and 5 minutes testing time (185 minutes). The test administration
begins
at 8:00
AM;for this reason, students are asked to report to their testing room at 7:45 AM. Students
who attempt to enter the testing room after 8:00 AM will not be allowed to do so; they will
not be allowed to take the exam at all.
Testing Time Breakdown
: Section I (multiple choice) includes 70 questions and is timed at 55
minutes. Section II (free-response essays) includes 3 essays (the DBQ, the CCOT, and the
CA) and is timed at 130 minutes, which includes the 10-minute reading period before the
DBQ. Section II time is allotted as a chunk; all students are given 10 minutes to read
through the prompts and the DBQ documents and then are allowed to write until the full
time is done. While a clock will be visible throughout the testing time, it is up to the student
to pace him/herself while writing each of the essays. The College Board
requires
the 10
minute reading period (which can also be used for pre-writing on
any
of the essay prompts)
and then
suggests
that students spend 40 minutes writing the DBQ, 40 minutes writing the
CCOT (taking about 5 minutes to plan) and 40 minutes writing the CA (taking about 5
minutes to plan).
Section I (Multiple Choice): 70 Questions, 55 minutes
Section I of the test will contain questions drawn from the 6 periods of the course in the percentages
specified on the chart below. Please note that no more than 20% of the questions will demonstrate a
focus on Europe.

WHAP: The Test

Section II (Free-Response): 3 Essays, 130 minutes

Students are given the entire 130 minute block at once; besides closely monitoring the first 10
minutes (for reading) and announcing when only 10 minutes remain of the time, the proctor may
not mention the passage of time, meaning that it is up to the test-taker to keep track of the time and
how long s/he is spending on a single essay.
Part A (the DBQ) begins with the mandatory 10-minute reading period, after which students
may choose to write
any
of the essays first, and can move freely from Part A to Parts B (the CCOT)
and C (the CA) as they finish each essay.
