Blacksmithing

Yesterday on 5/18/15 me and my classmates went on a field trip to Woldumar

Nature Center.
When we got there we watched a blacksmith (Bill Jenkins) forge many different
tools.
He made a spoon, a fire poker, and also a tiny leaf. He also showed us how people
back in the 1800s would have made a nail.

We all watched as he made a forge weld. He spread flux over the metal but only the
part he was going to weld.
He shoved it in the fire, and after a minute or two, he pulled it back out. Sparks
came from the smoldering metal.
He quickly hit the two hot pieces of metal together and forged them into one.
It was an amazing experience, and after the demo was over we all got to take a nail
as a souvenir.
