Evaluation of the Elements
Silver is a transition metal which means that it is in the center section of the Periodic
Table. Silver has the element symbol Ag and is between Palladium (Pd) and Cadmium (Cd)
putting it in group 11. This element has the atomic number of 47 which means that it has 47
protons. Silver also has 47 electrons and 61 neutrons. The element symbol for Silver (Ag) comes
from the Latin word argentum and the element name comes from the Old English word seolfor
which both mean silver. Silver can be used for many things but is mostly used for jewelry
because it is a malleable, ductile and lustrous/shiny metal which makes it easy to make into
jewelry. Silver can also be used for photography and is a great electrical conductor.
Unfortunately it tarnishes when in contact with Sulfur. The element Silver was one of the oldest
elements known to mankind.
Neon is a noble gas on the right end of the Periodic Table. Neon has the atomic number
of 10 and has 10 protons and electrons. Neon has the element symbol Ne. The Greek word neos
means new and that is where the name Neon comes from. Neon is mostly used for lighting
especially lighting of signs for example open/close or exit signs. Neon is a gas and is colorless
and odorless under normal circumstances. When in a vacuum discharge tube it glows an orangered which is why it is commonly used for signs. Neon only has three possible isotopes and has an
average atomic mass of 20.180.

There are many differences and similarities between the elements Neon and Silver. Neon
is a gas at 20 degrees Celsius and Silver is a solid at that temperature. Silver is a metal while
Neon is a non-metal which is why Silver is on the left side of the staircase and Neon is on the
right. Silver has a many more protons, neutrons and electrons than Neon does because Neon has
an atomic number of 10 while Silver has an atomic number of 47 but they both have less than 50
protons. Both Neon and Silver were both discovered before the 1900s even though Silver is an
alchemical element. Silver and Neon both have less than 5 stable isotopes, Silver has two and
Neon has three. The atomic symbol of Silver and the name of the element Neon both come from
a language in the Mediterranean.
