Republic of Cote dIvoire
Government: Republic of Cote dIvoire. They have the same branches of government that we do;
Executive, Judicial, and Legislative. Terms last: 5 years, no limit, and 5 years.

History: 1893, Ivory Coast (Cote dIvoire) becomes a French colony.

1960, France gave Ivory Coast complete independence, and Houphouet-Boigny became
president.
Recent History: A civil war broke out in 2002 when a candidate in the 2000 presidential election
was banned from the election for having foreign parents. These parents were Northern muslims,
who then felt like they were being discriminated against in politics. Ivory Coast is the world's
largest cocoa exporter. In 1993, Ghana played Ivory Coast in a championship soccer match, and
when Ghana eliminated Ivory Coast from the competition, Ghanaian immigrants in Ivory Coast
were attacked, resulting in 40 or more Ghanaian deaths.

Issues: Economy is completely dependant on oil and cocoa prices. The country is still getting
over dealing with the civil war. Approximately 500,000 people are living with HIV in Ivory
Coast, and about 40,000 deaths are recorded each year.

Defense: One of the Ivory Coasts issues right now is security/militia since the political situation
after the rebellion. Ivory Coast has remained allies with France, both in a military standpoint, and
a trading standpoint. They used to be allies with Ghana.

Economy: Dependant on oil/cocoa prices. Trade partners: France, Nigeria, and Netherlands.
Unemployment rate: 4% Labor force: 8,021,376 (2013)

Joined UN: 27th February 2004

Population: 20,320,000 people.

Who is involved? The government is involved with multiple countries, France and Nigeria are
their main allies, but Ghana is on the list too.

Total land area of about 322,463 square kilometers with approximately 515 kilometers of
coastline.

Religion: There are three main religion in the Ivory Coast. 28% believe in an indigenous religion,
12% of the country is Christian, and the overlayer is the 60% of the religious population is
Muslim.

All issues in Ivory Coast: Main issue is that the cocoa farmers are too poor to afford proper spray
to protect their farms from bugs, so they are resorting to using lower quality repellents, which are
giving the crop diseases.

Around 40% of the money paid by buyers is going to the government. And since most of the
farmers are small time farmers, they resort to using child labor.

Thesis
Our farmers are desperate, the smaller cocoa farms are too poor to afford good, healthy sprays to
protect their farms from bugs and disease therefore, the sprays they are using are cheap, and
cause more problems than they fix. This countrys main resource is cocao, and it is also the
worlds largest cocoa exporter meaning if our poor farmers keep producing diseased crop, the
worlds main chocolate export will be at stake. Hundreds of companies would be affected.
