SETTING/BACKGROUND
FRANCE,17891799
Francewasruledbyanabsolutemonarch,andsocietywasstilldividedbyastrictfeudal
hierarchy.Frenchcivilianswerenothappyaboutthis.Thesearetheirstories.

CAUSES
TherewereseveralcausesoftheFrenchRevolutionSocialDiscontentwasabigpartofit.
Thegovernmentswayofthinkingwas
simpleifyouwerebornintoanestate,
youdiedinthatestate.Theystrictly
believedinafeudalhierarchyandthat
royaltyshouldstayinthefamilyand
nobility.
Socially,thecomingofaninfluential
bourgeoisiewhichisthemiddleclass
typically,butevolvedtoaspiretopolitical
equalitywithFrenchnobility.Thelower
classpeopleweretreatedunfairly.The
Enlightenmentphilosophyalsopromoteda
newsocietywithouttheusualtraditions
whichchallengedtheauthorityoftheking
andthechurchandemphasizedonreasonandindividualism.
Therewerethreeestates,orclassestheClergy,nobility,andgeneralpopulation.
Economically,noblesandClergydidnotpaytaxesbutfarmers,contractors,peasants,etc.did
paytaxes.
Politically,therewasapoliticalconflictbetweenthemonarchyandnobilitybecausethe
monarchchangedthetaxsystemwhichleadtothenobilitybecomingbankrupt.

OUTCOMES

ThereweremanyoutcomesofTheFrenchRevolution
includingTheRevolutionalsowasamainreasonofthe
beheadingofQueenMarieAntoinetteandherhusband
KingLouisXVI,theywereexecutedfortheirhightreason
beforetheNationalConvention.Thereweremany
beheadingsasresultoftheRevolutionthiswasnamed
theReignofTerror.TheRevolutionunifiedFranceand
enhancedpowerofNationalState,Socialorderand
contractualrelationswereconsolidatedbytheCode
Napoleon.TheBourbonmonarchywasoverthrown.

AgeneralintheFrencharmythatoverthrewtheDirectoryanddeclaredhimselfthe
firstemperorofFrance.
MarieAntoinette:
ThewifeofkingLouisXVIandthesymbolofFrenchroyaltiesextravaganceand
excess.ShewasexecutedonOctober16,1793.
LouisXVI:
TheFrenchkingfrom17741792whowasdeposedduringtheFrenchRevolution.He
waslaterexecutedinJanuaryof1793.
