SUPERVISED PRACTICUM
SUMMER 2015
NAME: Danielle Maggiotta
LESSON TOPIC: Planets
RATIONALE: This technology-based introductory lesson is being implemented to
present the students with a basic knowledge about planets in our solar system.
COMMON CORE STANDARD(S):
RI.3.7: Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and
the words to demonstrate understanding of the text.
W.3.6: With guidance and support form adults, use technology to produce and
publish writing as well as interact and collaborate with others.
OBJECTIVE: (The student will be able to.)
Utilize PollEverywhere to explore and express their prior knowledge and engage
in meaningful whole-group discussions.
Interact with the technological tool: Solar System Tour, in order to gain a basic
understanding of the planets in our solar system. The presentation of the planets
will be done through the use of PBWorks.
ACADEMIC LANGUAGE:
Space, solar system, planets, stars, moon, universe, galaxy, constellation, sun, Mercury,
Venus, Earth, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
MOTIVATION OR ANTICIPATORY SET: In the schools computer lab, on the SMART
Board/projector, the teacher will set the dynamic of the lesson by playing the background
music from the Solar System Tour website: http://nineplanets.org/tour/. The teacher will
then ask the students What do you think we will be learning about today?; What does
this music remind you of? The teacher will scribe the students thoughts on chart paper,
to be discussed.
BRIEF PROCEDURE:

In the computer lab, the teacher will display the PollEverywhere questions on the
SMART Board/Projector.
The teacher will provide access for the students to log on to the teacher created
PBWorks page on their own computers.
The teacher will display the PollEverywhere website on the SMART
Board/Projector have the students respond to the first question: What is your
favorite planet? https://pollev.com/angelahalver928

The teacher will ask the students to access PollEverywhere from the PBWorks
page.
The teacher will circulate the classroom to assist students who need guidance.
Once the students have responded, the teacher will set conversation based upon
the students responses.
The teacher will then display the second question: What do you already know
about the solar system? and have the students access it on their computer:
https://pollev.com/angelahalver928.
The teacher will circulate the classroom to assist students who need guidance.
Once the students have responded, the teacher will set conversation based upon
the students responses.
The teacher will then display and ask the final question. The students will be
directed to respond to the following prompt: What questions do you have about
the solar system? https://pollev.com/angelahalver928.
The teacher will circulate the classroom to assist students who need guidance.
Once the students have responded, the teacher will set conversation based upon
the students responses.
The teacher will set focus for the following activity, by having the students click
on the tile, The Solar System Tour, at the bottom on the PBWorks page.
The teacher will direct their focus to the SMART Board/projector.
On the SMART Board/projector will be the Solar System Tour:
http://nineplanets.org/tour/.\
The teacher will model how to navigate the interactive tour by reviewing the
video about the sun. (Using Screencast-O-Matic, the teacher has voiced over a
description of the Sun. It has also been done for the remainder of the planets).
The teacher will explain to the students that the Solar System Tour will be
narrated through the use of PBWorks.
The students will be directed to explore the planets within the interactive solar
system tour by clicking on each video1 through 6.
As the students explore the each planet, they will hear the teachers voice
providing some facts about the planets with the use of Screecast-O-Matic.
The teacher will circulate the classroom to assist students who need guidance.
Upon providing students with ample time to complete their Solar System Tour,
the teacher will guide the students exit the website, and guide the students
attention to the main board.
As a closure, the teacher will display the Linoit on the SMART Board/projector
and explain that they will be providing a fact that they learned from the Solar
System Tour.
The teacher will model how to complete this task.
The students will be directed to their computer to complete this activity on,
http://linoit.com/users/halva70/canvases/Facts%20from%20Solar%20System
%20Tour.
The teacher will circulate the classroom to assist students who need guidance.

Once the students have responded, the teacher will set conversation based upon
the students responses.
(If students complete their work early, the teacher will allow them to access, The
Solar System Tour website, on their own for further interest).

ASSESSMENT OF COMMON CORE STANDARD (S)
Formal-The mastery of the objective will be assessed in a formal manner,
throughout the completion of the PollEverywhere and Linoit activities. Evidence
will be taken by the teacher using the table provided. The teacher will circulate
the classroom during the activities listed above to document each students

between each activity.
English Language Learner-The teacher will pre-teach the content-related
vocabulary to the student prior to the implantation of the lesson.
Struggling Reader (Reading Comprehension)-The teacher will sit the student
during the Solar System Tour and read-aloud the various facts to him or her, as
