English Communication Course Outline

This course is targeted towards developing communicative competence in English through
multiple topics. This course is made up of 8 two week mini-units focusing on a variety of topics
such as technology, social media, current events, global and local news stories, pop culture and
independent interests which are introduced at the beginning of each two week period. Each topic
represents 10% of your final grade with varying assignments and coursework. A final exam
comprising all 8 topics will make up the remainder of your final grade.

Topic 1: Twitter
Assignment 1: Twitter Group Presentation

- 3 minute oral presentation (using Power Point or Prezi)

Assignment 2: Trending Hashtag

- 550 600 words ,12 point font, Times New Roman

Topic 1: Assignment 1 & 2 Instructions


Assignment 1: Twitter Group Presentation Instructions
Purpose: To critically reflect on the impact of Twitter use on society.
Learners will work in groups of three or less to create a brief 3 minute presentation on their
opinions and reflections on the positive, negative or dual impacts Twitter has had on society and
individuals. Learners should provide examples and be specific when describing their opinions to
better support their presentation. Learners have the option of using either Power Point or Prezi
to enhance their presentation with images and relevant vocabulary.
Each learner will be given individual formative feedback to help them develop their
communication skills and improve for future topic presentations which will be graded.
Assignment 2: Trending Hashtag Instructions
Purpose: To interact with Twitter and learn about the power of hashtag movements and the
stories from which they derive.
Learners will work individually. Learners will sign up for their trending hashtag in class on the
sign-up sheet provided before the end of class on September 3 rd. Learners are strongly
encouraged to choose a trending hashtag that has not already been selected and has occurred
within the past 12 months that is of interest. This assignment must be typed using Word and
submitted via email as an attachment by midnight on September 15 th. Early submissions will be
accepted.

The content of your paper should include:
1. An explanation of how the hashtag was created and a brief summary of the story it
represents (who, what, where, when).
2. Your opinion on why this hashtag trended, think about the bigger social landscape (Why
do so many people care about this topic? Was it trending in one country or group of
people more than others? Why would that be?)
Required format:
- name, title and student number at the top of the page
- 550 600 words, 12 point font, double spaced, Times New Roman
- Emailed as an attachment to armstrong@ecc.kr
