Lesson Topic/Title: Area and Perimeter, Area and Perimeter of squares, rectangles,
and triangles
Author: Marie Echter
Introduction: The learners are about 8 year of age. This lesson is to help the
students get more help on the topic by having the lesson at home and working on the
problems (homework) in class and getting more one on one time with the teacher. The
lesson will be on YouTube so that the students can see the lesson from a computer or
mobile device. Also, they will be able to access that video during before and after school
programs if the family has no access to internet, computers, or mobile devices. Breaking
down the area and perimeter into shapes that are similar will help the students gain an
understanding of the shapes. This will also not over complicate area and perimeter.
There will be other videos to describe the area and perimeter of different shapes. The
students will always have access to the video to help them better understand and work
through the videos.
Grade Level: 3rd Grade math
Integrated Disciplines: Mathematics and technology

Colorado State Standards
Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level Expectations: Third Grade
Standard: 4. Shape, Dimension, and Geometric Relationships
Concepts and skills students master:
2. Linear and area measurement are fundamentally different and require different units of measure.
a. Use concepts of area and relate area to multiplication and to addition. (CCSS: 3.MD)
i. Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and apply concepts of area measurement.5
( CCSS: 3.MD.5)
ii. Find area of rectangles with whole number side lengths using a variety of methods6 (CCSS:
3.MD.7a)
iii. Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition and recognize area as additive.7
(CSSS: 3.MD.7)
b. Describe perimeter as an attribute of plane figures and distinguish between linear and area measures.
(CCSS: 3.MD)
c. Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons. (CCSS: 3.MD.8)
i. Find the perimeter given the side lengths. (CCSS: 3.MD.8)
ii. Find an unknown side length given the perimeter. (CCSS: 3.MD.8)

iii. Find rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and
different perimeters. (CCSS: 3.MD.8)
NETS-T Standards (NETS)
1. Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity
a. Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and
inventiveness
b. Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic
problems using digital
2. Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments
a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools
and resources to promote student learning and creativity
b. Develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students
to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in
setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and
assessing their own progress
NETS-S Standards (NETS)
1. Creativity and innovation
c. Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues
4. Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making
c. Collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed
decisions

Objectives Students will be able to apply their knowledge to find the area and

perimeter of squares, rectangles, and triangles. The student will watch the video and
carry out multiplication and addition to find the area and perimeter of squares, rectangle,
and triangles.

Assessment To determine if the students are understanding area and perimeter of

squares, rectangles, and triangles, I will collect their in class work to see their progress
and give them the correct answers. To do this, at the end of the class I will collect the
work they did and give them points for the work. I will check their work and give
feedback but they will not get points taking away for doing the problem wrong. I will
check their process of how they found the answers to area and perimeter.

Materials/Technologies
- The students will use their math books to do problems and reading if needed.
- Computers or mobile devices to access YouTube to watch the videos
- The videos links will also be on the class website to access
- The link will be sent directly to the families email as well
- Area formulas for squares, rectangles, and triangles

Procedures
-- Introduction to area and perimeter of squares, rectangles, and triangles
-- The students will be instructed to watch the video for homework and take notes and
due the problems at the end in their journals. They will also be reminded to bring any
questions they have to share with the class or the teacher.

-- The teacher will create the video on area and perimeter of squares, rectangles, and
triangles and upload the video to the class websites, YouTube, and sent the link to the
parents
-- The students will watch the video, take notes, and do the problems at the end and
come to class with any question and be ready to find the area and perimeter of squares,
rectangles, and triangles.
-- The next day the students will work on different area and perimeter problems and turn
in their progress to get feedback.
Differentiation
To make the lesson more challenging for the student, the teacher will provide harder
problems to solve for the area and perimeter. Leaving out a side or reverse operations
(such as giving area and solving for height) are some options.
To make the lesson easier for the students, the teacher will provide easier problems to
add or multiply. Also, they can provide extra assistance to students who need help. The
teacher can also provide more time for the students to work through the problems)

Closure
To help the students retain the information learned we will write down the formulas for
the shapes and they will create a square, rectangle, and triangle to help them remember
the area and perimeter. As a class, we will create a video to help the students remember
the area and perimeter formulas for squares, rectangles, and triangles. This video will be
uploaded to the same websites for the students to go back and watch.

References

To complete this lesson plan I used my own knowledge of area and perimeter of a
square, rectangle, and triangle.
I also used class notes on area and perimeter from a class I took at the University of
Northern Colorado (Math 285)

Explanation/ Reflection

I chose to make a video about math and specifically area and perimeter of squares,
rectangles, and triangles. I think that by creating a video of the lesson it allows student
to learn the topic on their own whereas this would normally take 30 plus minutes to
teach the students about the area and perimeter. Normally we have the students do
hours of homework on area and perimeter of the shapes. This allows the students to
watch a video at home or in their free time in a shorter amount of time and then do
problems at school and get more help on these problems than they would at home. This
allows the students to have more one on one time and time to get feedback from the
teacher. Technology will enhance their learning because they will have the ability to
watch the video multiple times or go and find problems to do online to gain a better
understand (the teacher could also upload or find a website with problems so the
students can work through them if they need more help or time understand and
mastering their skills.
