Sketch is defined as to create rough, undetailed drawings. An example of

sketch is for a designer to create a simple drawing of a garment he plans to sew.
Sketching is very useful especially in my course which is Architecture because I
will be able to translate my ideas from my mind. In this essay I am going to
describe how to sketch a kitchen tool.
The kitchen tool that I have selected is a rice cooker which is Panasonic
Rice Cooker (Microcomputer) SR-LVA18. This is a multi-function rice cooker and it
contain 5 microcomputer programmed menus. The physical appearance of this
rice cooker looks like a giant egg and it is in white colour. It has five button on it
which is start, menu, timer, cooking timer and stand- by/on off button. It contain
inner pan which is a black coated non-stick pan and it comes with accessories
which is rice scoop, scoop holder, measuring cup, steam plate. The capacity of
this rice cooker is 1.8litre. Consumption power of this rice cooker for cooking and
keep warm is 835watt and 95w. It weight 3.4kg and the dimension of the rice
cooker is 232 x 263 x 351. The reason why I chose this rice cooker as my
sketching object it is because it has many functions. As a university student that
stay far away from home, rice cooker is my best companion for cooking. Because
I can cook easily with this kitchen tool. It is really convenient because I can just
simply set timer and put all my ingredients in it. The most interesting part is it
will keep food warm after it is done cooking.
Before sketching the rice cooker, there are few drawing tools that I need to
prepare which is A4 paper, 2B pencil, 6B pencil, blending stump and eraser. On
the shading part, I personally use a darker pencil which is 6B. In order to make
me felt comfortable when I am sketching, I like to sketch in a cleaner place and a
silent place so that I could sketch with peace of mind.

The first step to sketching a rice cooker is put it in a right place and right
angle that I wanted to draw. Different places will produce different kind of
shadows. So, I need to choose a right angle that I can easily sketch out. Next, by
watching it I need to be very concentrate to sketch out the outline so that it
would not be very messy and I would make sure that my outline is neat and tidy.
After that, a value scale was created. The value scale will help me to determine
the different depths of my shaded drawing. A complete value scale will range
from white all the way to black with many shades of grey in between. Then, light
source was located .The brightest areas will be those closest to the light, and the
darkest areas will be the furthest away. After located the light source, circular
shading methods for my shading areas was used. Next, preliminary shading of
my drawing was created. Since I was still in the edit mode of my drawing, so I
would not use the full darkness of my pencil so that I can erase or move shadows
and light spots easily. This means press lightly, and only barely fill in areas that
need shading. In other hand, more layers of shading was sketched. Darken
gradually, each time laying a thin layer of shade. The contrast between light
areas and dark areas should become more clear and distinct. Finally, blend
shaded areas. For the smoothest blend, I used a blending stump. It helped me
smoothed out any rough edges and makes the shading more gradual and
realistic.
This sketching process took me about two hours to finish it. I am not a
person who sketch a lot so I took quite a long time for sketching. This is my first
time sketching a rice cooker. I faced a lot of problems at first because I do not
know how to do shadings. So I did some research and surprisingly I learned so
many knowledge about shading and sketching through this assignment but the
most important is my sketching skill has highly improved. After this, I will do
more sketches with more shading skills in order to improve my drawing skills.
