Teacher Education at North Greenville University

AIM The teacher education program at North Greenville University, a Christ centered institution,
prepares teacher candidates to become effective practitioners, caring leaders, and lifelong learners in a
diverse and changing society.
Every course within the division is designed to meet objectives aligned with the aim of the teacher
education program. The vision, mission, aim, and philosophy, along with unit outcomes and candidate
proficiencies are articulated in the divisions Conceptual Framework. As presented in the framework
candidates who are successful teachers are effective practitioners, caring leaders, and lifelong learners.
The objectives in this course are designed to develop your competencies as you work toward these
goals.
OUTCOME 1: THE TEACHER IS AN EFFECTIVE PRACTITIONER, GROUNDED IN CONTENT
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLED IN IMPACTING STUDENT LEARNING
Candidates employ multiple resources beyond the textbook such as including concrete objects,

OUTCOME 2: THE TEACHER IS A NURTURING AND CARING LEADER.

Candidates respect, value, and establish high expectations for all students creating an inclusive

OUTCOME 3: THE TEACHER IS A LIFELONG LEARNER WHO BY EXAMPLE AND

INSTRUCTION INVITES LIFELONG LEARNING IN STUDENTS.

Course Description:

This course teaches strategies, techniques, and applications for using technology in teaching elementary
students. The class will be conducted in a seminar format requiring extensive and intensive participation
in discussions related to the seminar topics and based on experiences in classrooms, with elementary
concepts being explored and applied to educational technology.

Course Rationale:
In today's technologically advanced world, elementary teachers need the knowledge and experience of
how technology can be used in an appropriate manner to facilitate student learning. Applications of
strategies, activities, projects, etc. will be shared and practiced in order to provide the practitioner with
the confidence and competency to incorporate technology as an educational tool to teach, assess,
remediate, and accommodate those students from grades second-fifth.

Course Objectives:
I. Academic Objectives (cognitive domain)
Upon completion of this course the student will:
A. Have a practical knowledge of technology available for educational purposes for elementary
children.
B. Have an understanding of the potential usage for technology in the classroom.
C. Be able to give reflective reasons for the incorporation of specific technology as a means of meeting
specific learning needs of students.
D. Become acquainted with various aspects of educational technology and media, and how it is used in
classes.
E. Have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Active Inspire.
F. Understand the changes that occur in information technology.
G. Integrate advance features of technology-based productivity tools to support instruction, extend
communication outside the classroom, enhance and perform administrative routines more
effectively.

II. Attitudinal Objectives (affective domain)
Upon completion of this course the student will:
A. Develop self-esteem and confidence in the use and manipulation of educational technology and
media.
B. Appreciate the potential and possible "enjoyment" of the implementation of media technology
into one's lessons that will motivate their students.

III. Performance Objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
A. Make practical educational use of Microsoft Programs
B. Use and create educational materials utilizing MS Publisher, Prezi, Active Inspire, Google Docs,
Pinterest,
Google Earth, and other media.
C. Proficiently conduct research from the Internet.
D. Integrate technology into a given lesson plan.
E. Proficiently and creatively design and construct a personal teacher web site
F. Explore, learn, and present new technologies to their peers.
Methods of Presentation:
Material may be covered by using class discussion, lecture, assigned readings, projects, and learning
activities.
Class Attendance:
Students are expected to attend all sessions of class and to be prompt. Any absence should be for
emergencies only. Students are allowed 3 absences. The student is responsible for any missed worked.
Professional Dispositions:
Students will meet the standards of professionalism outlined in the Assessment of Dispositions.
Disability Policy:
Any student who needs special accommodations due to a diagnosed disability must notify the Education
Department in the Foster Educational Building and provide documentation concerning the disability.
South Carolina Education and Economic Development Act:
Preparation of candidates in this course is addressed through discussion of how government policy
affects education and an understanding of the EEDA.
Diversity:
Diversity issues are addressed in this course through assigned readings with reflections, projects, and
class discussions.
Written Work:
Written work is expected to be at the same level as you would expect from a teaching professional. All
work should be in APA style and free from errors. All written work must be turned in by e-mail as well
as a hard copy. If you submit work with significant errors you will be referred to the writing laboratory
for consultation and you will be required to document your attendance with the writing lab staff.
Academic Integrity:

Plagiarism is dishonesty. If you are not sure what it is, ASK. Any plagiarized work will receive a grade
of ZERO for the assignment and a lower grade for the course. The student WILL be recommended for
expulsion. Please know that I use Turnitin Technology on all written work.
Oral Communication:
Oral communication is expected to be at the same level as you would expect from a teaching
professional. All presentations should be clear, concise, and free of grammatical errors. Content and
teaching methodology should be addressed in an enthusiastic, demonstrative manner. The COE Oral
Rubric will be used for assessing oral presentations.
Late Policy:

1. Skills assessments (individual activities and projects, participation, etc.) First 13 days = Midterm
Grade
2. Final Exam: Exam is scheduled for last two days of class and exam day.
3. Professional technology e-portfolio of all course work.
4. Successful completion of Cohort Experience
5. Assignments will be turned into Live Text for grading
6. Successful completion of NGU Teacher Evaluations
