Introduction
Task:
In this assignment, we are given a task to propose a new project on any
empty land that should be between 50m x 50m (2500m2 ) 50m x 70m
(3500m2 ) that serves one of the following purposes:

1. Recreation area
2. Commercial area
3. Industrial area
4. Agricultural area
5. Tourism area
6. Residential area

Our group consists of two members: Adam Pandor and Calvin Wong Kim
Ming.
We plan to propose a project for a Recreational Area on our site.

Brief Introduction to the Site

Our site is located in Ara Damansara. The blue box represents EMPTY
LAND and the red box represents our 50m x 50m site. We plan to propose a
project for a Recreational Area because there is no recreational area in the
nearby site context. We were planning to propose a commercial area but
there is already a mall nearby our site so instead we decided to propose a
recreational area.

My Proposal

RATIONALE
Proposal:
I plan to build a recreational area at this empty land because in the nearby
there is a school, some residential area and also a shopping mall. I will
demolish the forest and build a recreational area there. It will be a
recreational park.

Reasons:
Why I proposed to build a recreational area?

I found that there is lack of recreational area for the students and the
residents there living in the residential area.
The reason that I plan to propose a recreational area here is because
I found that the residents there lack of some activity place. Example,
jogging, cycling, picnic and etc.

Why a recreational area in the first place?

Social Benefit
When there is a weekend or public holiday, residents that living nearby can
go to the park to have a picnic rather than just staying at home doing
nothing. Residents can also socialize with other people in the park.

Environmental Benefit
It is proven by scientists that the presence of plants can improve the
surrounding air quality. Plants can absorb the carbon dioxide from the
polluted air and pass through a process in plants thats called
photosynthesis and produce oxygen.

Next, my site is located beside the roadside, therefore, plants can help
lower the background noise. Plants have long been used to reduce noise
from busy roads. More recently, research has shown another benefit:
interior plants can help to reduce background noise levels inside buildings,
too.

Impacts
There is a limited place for residents or students nearby there
because it is not really a big park.
There is no public toilet in the park.
It will be a bit dangerous to cross the road because there is no bridge
provided.

Plan of my Recreational Park

Images/Concept of Recreational Park

-Street gym area. People can have a simply workout at here instead of
paying money to go for gym.

-Playground area. Kids can have fun in the playground and also make new
friends there also.

-Open Picnic Area. Everyone can have a place for picnic when there is a
public holiday or weekend and also they communicate more with other
people.

My Proposal

RATIONALE
Proposal:
I plan to propose a recreational area at this empty land because in the
immediate vicinity of this site, there is a high school, a kindergarten, a
couple of condominiums and a shopping mall not very far from the site. My
aim is turn the empty land into a recreational park that would benefit the
students and the residents living nearby and obviously other people as well.
It will be an open to public park.
The park will include a skateboard/freestyle cycling area, a playground for
kids, a jogging/cycling track, open space to chill/have a picnic etc.

Reasons:
Why I propose to build a recreational area?
I found that the area lacks a recreational park. By having a
recreational park, the students and the residents can go there and
engage in some activities like cycling, jogging etc.
To provide a place for children and families to connect with nature
and recreate outdoors together.

14

Why a recreational park in the first place?

Social Benefits
Parks are a tangible reflection of the quality of life in a
community. They provide identity for citizens and are a major factor
in the perception of quality of life in a given community. Parks and
recreation services are often cited as one of the most important
factors in surveys of how livable communities are.
Parks provide gathering places for families and social groups, as well
as for individuals of all ages and economic status, regardless of their
ability to pay for access.
Parks provide a sense of public pride and cohesion to every
community.

Health and Environmental Benefits

Parks and recreation facilities are the places that people go to get
healthy and stay fit.
According to studies by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, creating, improving and promoting places to be
physically active can improve individual and community health and
result in a 25 percent increase of residents who exercise at least
three times per week.

A study by Penn State University showed significant correlations to

reductions in stress, lowered blood pressure, and perceived physical
health to the length of stay in visits to parks.

15

Parks and protected public lands are proven to improve water

quality, protect groundwater, prevent flooding, improve the quality
of the air we breathe, provide vegetative buffers to development,
produce habitat for wildlife, and provide a place for children and
families to connect with nature and recreate outdoors together.

Psychological benefits
Outdoor recreation has psychological benefits, including the prevention or
reduction of stress; improved self-esteem, confidence and creativity;
spiritual growth; and an increased sense of exhilaration, adventure and
challenge from life. Getting outside provides physical benefits, such as
aerobic, cardiovascular and muscular fitness, as well as improved
functioning of the immune system.

Impacts
Typical impacts in parks include soil erosion and compaction, damage
to vegetation, water pollution, vandalism and noise.
They will also be limited space in the park, as such, not all the
students and residents can come at once.

Plan of my Recreational Park

17

Images/Ideas of my Recreational Park

This is a skateboard area. The skateboarders playground.

This is a jogging/cycling track. I propose to keep it at the boundary of the

park with trees so that joggers can have shade and some cool breeze while
jogging or cycling.

There will be plenty of open, grassy space for tossing around a football or
Frisbee. Shelters, picnic tables, grills, bathrooms, and abundant shade are
all available. And also a beautiful hardscape for a better feel while
picnicking.

the site until the project is complete.

Landscape Architect:
The Landscape Architect will be working with the main architect and he will
be the one that will decide where to put all the landscape elements such as
