ancients,waserroneouslyascribedbyLinnaeustoJuniperusphoenicea
L.(J.lyciaL.),butreallyisderivedfromBoswelliaCarterii
Birdw.,andB.FrereanaBirdw.ThesearesmalltreesoftheFam.
Burseraceae,growinginSomalilandandArabia.Theycontain
schizogenousgumoleoresinreservoirsintheirbark.Thenatives
incisethebarkandcollectthegumresinassoonasthisexudation
hasdried.
TheArabianorAfricanfrankincenseoccursasyellowishtears,and
irregular,reddishlumpsoraglutinatedmasses.Thetearsare
generallysmall,brittle,withadullandwaxyfracture,but
softeningtoaplasticmasswhenchewed.Theodorisaromatic,
balsamic;thetasteslightlybitter.Whentrituratedwithwater,the
drugformsamilkyemulsion.Olibanumissimilartoturpentineinits
medicinalaction,butisnolongerused.Itisoccasionallyemployed
forfumigationandinunofficialplasters.Dose,1to4Gm.
(approximately15to60grains).
