Lesson Plan for 12th Grade U.S. Government

1. Standards:
a. -C15.[9-12].4 Analyze the role of the media in the process of
political persuasion.
-C15.[9-12].5 Evaluate propaganda in the political process.
b. - Principle 1 Knowledge of Subject Matter, The teacher
understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures
of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and can create learning
experiences that make these aspects of subject matter
meaningful to students.
-Principle 4 Variety of Instructional Strategies, The teacher
understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to
encourage students development of critical thinking, problem
solving, and performance skills.

2. Objectives:
-Students will be able to identify political persuasion while watching
CNN.

-Students will be able to evaluate a political cartoon in groups.

3. Materials/Equipment:

CNN: Roseanne Barr and Ted Nugent video clip

Paper

Pencil

Political Cartoon Handout

Grading Rubric

4. Procedures:
1. Teacher will introduce subject to students by creating an
attention hook. Teacher must start out and say, Students did
you know that the media is often used as a tool for political
persuasion? Teacher will announce that today students will be
viewing a video clip from CNN and evaluating a political cartoon
in groups.
2. Teacher will then lecture the students for 10 minutes about
political persuasion and the media. Students that are linguistic
learners will benefit from this.
3. Students will sit and listen quietly while taking notes.
4. Teacher will play the CNN: Roseanne Barr and Ted Nugent clip
from the computer and project it onto the whiteboard. This will
be beneficial to visual-spatial learners.

5. Teacher will then ask students if they have any questions about
the clip. This is beneficial for auditory learners.
6. Teacher will tell students to get into groups of 4. By getting into
groups students with interpersonal learning styles will be
benefited.
7. Teacher will then tell students to get out a piece of paper and
have the students write down how political persuasion was used.
Students have 30 minutes to complete this assignment.
8. Students will then beginning discussing and analyzing the video
they just watched.
9. Teacher will then tell the groups to present their assignment to
the class. This will take 15 minutes at most. Students must
answer questions from peers.

Teacher will then collect the assignment from each group.

Teacher will then handout a political cartoon.

Students are required to evaluate what is going on in the

political cartoon.

Students may work in groups of 2.

Teacher will have students work on this for 30 minutes.

Teacher will then have a class discussion about the political

cartoon.

Teacher will grade each student using rubric.

5. Closure:

How has propaganda been influence in the political process?

How has media persuaded the viewers on politics?

Have you gained an understanding of propaganda?
