Lesson 3: Reverse Engineering

File 3.3.3: Reverse Engineering Worksheet

Below is a list of the steps in the reverse engineering process. Document your work as you
reverse engineer the product.

Prediction
What is the purpose of this product? The purpose of an iPhone is so you can use the
internet, play games, and talk to the friends and family.
How does it work? Hit the one button then swipe the screen then do what you want
to do.
What market was it designed to appeal to? Walmart
List some of the design objectives for the product. IPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c,
iPhone 6, and iPhone 6+.
List some of the constraints that may have influenced the design. Many have noted the
device's similarities to Apple's previous touch-screen portable device, the Newton
Message Pad. The iPhone is nearly all screen. Its form factor is credited to Apple's
head of design.
Observation (before you take it apart)
How do you think it works? Hit the on button then swipe the screen and go to
what you want to go to.
How does it meet design objectives (overall)? A commitment to rigorous quality
assurance. Suppliers must be committed, as we are, to ensuring the highest
standards of social responsibility.
Why is it designed the way it is? So it would be easy to fix if it ever got broken.
Disassemble? How does it work? We are also seeing a new power management IC
by Dialog Semiconductor and a new audio codec and class D amplifier by Cirrus
Logic.
How is it made? Starting with the aluminum, we machine all of the surfaces of the
enclosure. We then polish and texture them. We then use crystal and diamonds to
cut the chamfers. With the part on the convey two high-powered cameras take
pictures of the housing and by high-powered Apple means a whopping 29megapixels and instantaneous analysis is done and then the best match out of the

diamond (on the scale of transparent materials).

Analyze
Carefully examine and analyze subsystems (i.e. structural, mechanical, and electrical)
and develop annotated sketches that include measurements and notes on components,
system design, safety, and controls. (Attach sketches to this sheet.)
Test
Carefully reassemble the product.
Operate the device and record observations about its performance in terms of
functionality (operational and ergonomic) and projected durability. Phones based
on eight factors, including size, weight, grip and the quality of the front and
back panels. The iPhone is more susceptible to scratches than previous
generations; and for that, we have put a shiny new iPhone up against some
sharp objects. We also put the device through a number of drop tests that
you would encounter in everyday situations.

Documentation

foundation of the system. IPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 6, and iPhone
6+.
List the major flaws and major successes of the product. The iPhones battery sucks.
Theyre not great, theyre not even really all that good. Theyre adequate. They get
us through the bulk of a work or travel day, for sure, but they do so in a way that
is subconsciously crippling the capabilities of not only the hardware bits inside but
also the software that you use. A name that took the mobile industry by storm
when it launched. It totally revolutionized the cell phone industry. Over the years,
each and every successor of the iPhone has been more successful and made better
than its predecessors. The iPhones design has played a major role in its success.
Ever since the first iPhone was unveiled.
Identify any refinements that might enhance the products usefulness. Consider material
choice, manufacturing methods, safety, durability, usability. The iPhone in a way is
like a laptop, it is three things in one an iPod, a revolutionary mobile phone and
it can be used to surf the web and to do other things like guide you to your
destination using the google maps. And you can text and call people.
