DIRECTIONS: Complete the Quarters Tic-Tac-Toe Board as a way to keep track of your
understanding of the novels you read during Silent Reading. Each quarter you will be required to
put together a Book Talk, which will fill in ONE square on your board; the rest of the projects are
your choice! Teacher must sign off on each task in order for you to receive credit. Prove you have
read and understood the novel.
Blue Bucks
3 in a row (not including Book Talk)= 7 Blue Bucks plus ONE HW pass
3 in a row (including Book talk)= 6 Blue Bucks
Individuals, not including Book Talk (just a grade)= 2 Blue Bucks each
BOOK TALK: (See Directions on the Book Talk Handout)
YOUR CHOICE: You only need to complete ONE project PER BOOK. ALWAYS use complete
sentences.
1. DRAW an important scene from the novel. Include details. Below, write a 10 sentence
explanation of what is going on in the scene and why this part is important in the novel.
2. FIND 6 difficult vocabulary words in the novel. Copy the original sentence, define the word,
and use it in your own sentence. Lastly, rewrite the original sentence using your own
synonym (similar word).
3. As you read, POST-IT (quality): predictions, connections, and questions; At least 5 each.
4. Write a letter to the author, EXPLAINING two things you liked about the novel, and two
lessons you learned from the story/characters. 20 sentences.
5. CREATE a 30-sentence Epilogue for the story: what will happen to the characters/plot after
the story?
6. The book you are reading will be made into a movie. CHOOSE a location and famous actors
to play the parts. Explain your decisions: why this setting, and why these actors? Print/draw
pictures.
7. Find three points in the novel that you can connect to. Summarize the spot, and then WRITE
a short narrative about how this relates to you. 10 sentences each connection.
8. RESPONSE: Pretend you could put yourself in your novel. Where would you put yourself and
why? How would your being there change the story? Give examples, and be specific. 20
sentences.
9. CREATE a musical soundtrack for your novel. Choose 4 songs, and explain (5 sentences each)
how each song connects to a specific event in the novel. Include the Song Title and Artist.
10.Pretend you are a famous reporter on TV. Write a 20-sentence story for the Evening News
SUMMARIZING what youve read. Make your writing sound like a real news report.

11.DESCRIBE three similarities & three differences between the main character and yourself.
Refer to specific moments in the text and in your own life. 30 sentences (around 5 sentences
each sim/diff).
12.Pick a scene in which you have disagreed with how a character handled a situation/person.
EXPLAIN why you disagree, and RE-WRITE the scene in the way you think it should have
happened. Use sensory details and dialogue! About 30 sentences.
