Introduction To Computers

A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information,

or data. It has the ability to store, retrieve, and process data.

They help us perform tasks in an simpler way.

Throughout generations, it has made our jobs even easier to do.

Pre-Computer Age

Charles Babbage is considered a

father of the computer. He
designed the Difference Engine,
which is a computing machine that
was to be used in the calculating
and printing of math tables. Around
the year of 1830, he designed a
second one calling it the Analytical
Engine which was used in
calculating complicated problems.

First Generation

First Generation computers used vacuum

tubes for circuity and magnetic drums for
memory.

They were so big that took up entire

rooms.

They were very expensive to operate.

Generated a lot of heat which cause

malfunctions.

Relied on machine language and would

only solve a problem at a time.

Second Generation

In the 2nd generation transistors

replaced the vacuum tubes used in the
1st generations.

They are smaller, faster, cheaper,

more energy-efficient and reliable than
computers in the 1st generation.

Transistors still generated lots of heat.

Punch cards for input and printouts for

output.

Moved from machine language to

symbolic language.

Third Generation

Integrated circuits.

Transistors were miniaturized and

placed on semiconductors which
increased the speed.

Keyboards and monitors interfaced

with an operating system

Became accessible to a mass

audience.

Apllications.

Fourth Generation

Microprocessor

Intel 4004 chip located all components

of the computer.

IBM introduced its first computer.

In 1984, apple introduced the

Macintosh.

Computers could be linked together to

from networks.

Fifth Generation

Based on artificial intelligence

Still in development

Voice Recognition

Use of parallel processing and

superconductors

Nanotechnology will radically

change computers in future.

Most Important Advancement

Windows 1.0

Windows 1.0 was released November 20, 1985 Its first

incarnation was as a front end for Microsoft's command-line DOS,
or Disk Operating System.

It was not popular but it made a great advancement in computer

history because it started Windows.
